Journey into X-Men Day 576
Today I read Excalibur 43-44.
Technet worked to rebuild the lighthouse but they keep making noise and prevent Brian from reading his book. Then he hears Nightcrawler say Meggan’s name while he was sleeping and dreaming about her, and he causes Brian to get really angry.
Technet proceeds to eat Kitty’s teddy bear and destroy the bathroom. Brian fries to fly away to read his book but the new zero gravity elevator in the lighthouse launches him into another room.
Finally he can take it no more and he starts beating up Nightcrawler because of jealousy. He thinks that Nightcrawler is trying to seduce Meggan. Meggan oversees the fight and she gets upset and flees but not before breaking up the fight.
Brian and Nightcrawler talk and Nightcrawler reveals that he did have feelings for Meggan but that they aren’t love. So they put aside their differences while Rachel goes after Meggan.
Suddenly other members of the Captain Britain Corps capture Brian and put him on trial for violating their rules. They said that him attacking Nightcrawler is just the last straw since he has killed someone and beaten up other members of the corps and also led the Cross Time Caper illegally. Hauptmann England serves as his prosecutor while Captain UK defends him. Eventually he throws off the court and says he doesn’t need to defend himself so the court decides that he’s guilty and they plan on executing him.
Rachel and Meggan bond and try to find out who Meggan’s parents are and why her memories are jumbled. Rachel reads her mind and Meggan’s memories are so powerful she almost fuses with her. Rachel realizes that Meggan doesn’t really have goals for the future and doesn’t look toward the past and only lives in the moment. Not unlike how Rachel constantly has to try and decide if her memories are real or implants.
Meggan and Rachel go to a family that she knew before she joined the team and they reveal that there is a Romani woman who might know Meggan’s past. They go and visit her and she reveals that Meggan’s parents are in France.
While this is happening Rachel tries to stop a robbery by an invisible enemy. But another hero named Micromax stops her because he thinks that she’s the one stealing. But witnesses tell him otherwise and he apologizes.
Also Alistaire comes to the lighthouse which now resembles a mushroom to ask for Rachel to come with him to Ireland for an archaeological dig but since she’s not there agrees to take Kitty instead.
Thomas head of Scotland Yard comes to Nightcrawler with a medium who claims a crime is going to happen and that they need his help to stop it but he turns it down only for them to both become more frantic.
On the other Earth Kylun works with his princess Sa’tneen to fight for freedom against a tyrannical overlord.
A lot happened in these issues. But one fo the key moments was the final culmination of the Nightcrawler-Meggan-Brian love triangle. At least I hope it’s the end. Love triangles can be compelling but this particular one just wasn’t working for me. So I’m glad to see that they are moving on.
Although I think Brian continues to have issues. A lot of characters have flaws but Brian’s are so prevalent they make him feel human. In a way he seems like the Squidward of the book. But I’m hoping after his trial he can balance out a bit more.
I liked the trial scene since I’ve not had a lot of exposure to the Captain Britain Corps so I liked seeing all the different versions of Captain Britain, even if most of them didn’t do a whole lot.
The Rachel and Meggan plot was also nice because it allowed the characters to have some female bonding which was sort of lacking in their relationship. I’m not entirely sure where that storyline is headed though. I hope it becomes awesome!
I also believe that Micromax and Kylun eventually become members of Excalibur and I’m really interested in seeing what they bring to the team.
Excelsior!
Captain UK! And her husband Rick who does not have a superhero name i guess.
