Its been months now. months of hopeless torturous days and night drawn out by pain and training.
months now. months of villain's team searching. months of supervillain frantic worrying.
The last few weeks Villain had been given a hero identity known as the 'Tell-Tale' and has been fighting alongside hero.
Handler had told Villain that their training had pulled off and constantly cooed and awed at them as they obeyed every command.
Hero had said it was good enough but the first mistake they see will earn them retraining.
Villain was good now.
very good.
He listened to commands and new all the tricks now! Even learned how to turn off those pesky flight or fight reactions. so now he was good.
Villain liked the new name hero calls him- though the other day when fighting a team of villains they had called him something else. Something so revolting. so evil. They called him Villain!
Villain was Tell-Tale the hero apparentness to Hero.
Villain mentioned this to Hero after they fought the team to retreat but Hero was angry. it didn't make any sense to villain.
Handler and Hero talked a long time when they got back to the base but villain didn't know what they spoke about.
It was bad to eavesdrop. And villain wasn't bad. no. so he sat on his bed tracing his palm with his index finger as he waited in silence.
Eventually Hero stood in the door way Villain's small room. Hero was looking down at Villain with disgust and a look of deep hatred. Villain hated when hero looked at him like that. like he was dirty. like he was an object.
That night was a blurry haze. Villain dissociated through most of it. Not remembering much of it just small bits and pieces. Hero never touched him like that before. Had never stripped him of his clothing and delt such pain.
Liar. hero has done this before. Villain doesn't remember most of those times though. Of course not. Its easier to think the mind of a caged animal then to live as one.
Villain woke in the morning to his aching sore body laid carelessly on the floor beside his bed as though discarded.
He had deep bruising along his neck and shoulders, his hips were colored in dark purples and blues as well.
Villain looked around in a daze. head throbbing painfully as he reached for his discarded clothing.
he got up slowly mindful of the pain as he put on his clothing and tidied the bed before sitting back down on the floor to wait for Handler to bring him breakfast.
They were yelling again. Handler and Hero were always disagreeing. so often at each others throats you'd have mistaken them for predatory creatures.
Villain ate the food slowly. when did Handler bring him food? When did handler even come to the room? Villain didn't stop eating to think the messy thoughts.
Handler at some point took the plate back. was villain done? He didn't know.
Hero didn't come to get villain for the evening patrol he usually has been taking him on.
villain sat slumped against the bed while running his index finger over his palms as his mind drifted.
Hero went crashing through the door, a grin splitting their face when they saw their Villain. Although their Villain wasn’t how they usually were.
No.
They were tied to a chair.
A gag in their pretty mouth.
The urgency in Villain’s eyes and the sudden jerking struggle in their restraints was the only warning Hero had before something hit them from the side. Hero saw a flash of white behind their eyes, before another strike sent them to the ground their ears ringing.
Villain crying out the only sound Hero cared about. Hero had barely got their arms under them before a kick to their stomach had them rolling onto their back with a groan.
“I told you villain, didn’t I tell you?” Supervillain’s voice came into focus, as Hero heard the door close and the distinct sound of it locking. “I told you Hero is too arrogant and always forgets check their blind spots.”
“Nice to see you too, Supervillain,” Hero said moving to get up, only for Supervillain to place a boot on Hero’s chest. Not applying any pressure but just showing a clear warning that they could.
Hero grabbed Supervillain’s ankle with their right hand. Just before they could push it off their chest, Supervillain smacked Hero’s hand with their weighted baton. Hero hissed and pulled their hand back protectively, while Supervillain leaned a little weight on Hero’s chest. Just enough for them to feel it.
“Pleasure’s all mine,” Supervillain said with a pleasant smile. “Be a dear and stay down, would you?”
“Normally I would, but Villain and I have a date and you seem to have invited yourself. Now I’m not saying you’re ugly Supervillain, but—” before Hero could finish the sentence Supervillain swung the baton down hard. It hit Hero’s jaw so hard it whipped their head to the side so they were facing Villain, tears springing to their eyes.
Supervillain tsked, moving the baton to Hero’s throat and pressing down. Supervillain kept just enough pressure on it so Hero was forced to yield and stay motionless on the floor. Their hand and jaw still stinging with the smack like a warning.
Supervillain liked control. They liked being in control of every situation. It all had to go Supervillain’s way. They enjoyed having Hero below them docile and Villain tied up and gagged in the room witnessing Supervillain’s exertion of control, of their power.
“You and Villain,” Supervillain repeated. Hero still hadn’t turned to face Supervillain after the baton struck their cheek. Instead they kept their eyes on Villain, their Villain still tied up and gagged on a chair. It was their expression that kept Hero’s gaze though, their furrowed brows and wide panicked eyes and their helpless struggles.
A sudden, merciless strike to the face had Hero’s attention back on Supervillain. Their face burning with the power behind the metal strike as they let out a sharp cry. They moved under Supervillain but the baton was back on their throat and they yielded when Supervillain spoke again.
“Oh, i know all about your little scheming. You must forgive Villain,” Supervillain drawled coldly, their gaze going to their subordinate who shrunk back in their chair. “They do like to get a bit too carried away with their food. A lesson I hope you can help me rectify today.”
Before Hero could ask what Supervillain meant Supervillain’s arm swung back and slammed the baton down on Hero’s windpipe. Hero jerked up, gasping and choking and involuntary response. They had barely wheezed out their first breath before the baton swung down again on Hero’s cheek, then nose with a crunch before a foot slammed down on Hero’s chest.
They thought they were going to die. That Supervillain wouldn’t stop. Something hard slammed into the side of Hero’s ribs. They didn’t think they just rolled trying to get away, but a knee slammed onto their spine and hands were grabbing Hero’s wrists and they were choking on blood and breathlessness that they didn’t even realise what Supervillain was doing.
The familiar clack of power dampening cuffs made Hero’s blood run cold and soon they were struggling against the knee, trying to pull their hands forward and twist away from Supervillain. Hero got their free hand under them and pushed up with all their might trying to somehow shake Supervillain off them but it was useless.
Supervillain just twisted Hero’s cuffed hand up their back more and Hero cried out, trying to buck Supervillain off them. Supervillain was patient and just pushed their arm up further unrelenting. All Hero had managed to do was tire themselves out more than help themselves and they eventually went still.
“Supervillain wait—” Hero pleaded, their voice breaking but it was too late. The final click sealed their fate and Hero felt empty with the familiar buzz of power through their veins.
They were too weak to fight Supervillain off and now they were finished.
Weak.
Vulnerable.
Exactly how Supervillain liked their victims.
“Now, now Hero. Don’t worry, it’s just a precaution,” Supervillain said sickly sweet. Supervillain grabbed the chain of the cuffs on Hero’s wrists back until Hero was slumped into a kneeling position on the floor. They patted Hero on the head before walking around to Hero’s front and grinned at the pair of Hero and Villain, tied up and powerless.
Hero struggled futilely against the cuffs, glaring up at Supervillain. All traces of humour gone from their face.
“I do love it when you just accept your fate, so resolute. So heroic,” Supervillain cooed down at the Hero, but Hero didn’t care. They were too focused on Villain at their side, who was looking back at them.
“Oh Villain! How silly of me I forgot you couldn’t talk,” Supervillain said, voice full of mirth now that they had the pairs full attention on them They were by Villain’s side in two short strides, ripping the tape off their mouth.
“Fuck you,” Villain croaked, voice hoarse and it nearly pained Hero to hear them sound so defeated. How long did Supervillain have them locked up like this? Hero should have known, should have got here sooner.
As if reading Hero’s mind the villain shot them a sad smile, “don’t beat yourself up about it.”
“Yes, Villain. Well said. Hero of all people deserve your respect and sympathy and sorry’s don’t they?”
Before Villain could respond, Supervillain had gripped their cheeks with one hand pressing them in painfully and with so much force the chair Villain was tied to rocked back only held up by Supervillain’s strong hold.
“Not the person who dragged you in off the street, fed you, raised you, taught you everything they know?”
“Let them go!” Hero yelled, one leg under them lunging up only to be slammed down to the floor by invisible hands, their bound hands pressing awkwardly against their back.
“Heroes should be seen and not heard,” Supervillain sneered bringing a finger to their lips at Hero. Hero opened their mouth for another retort when the invisible hands slammed down on their mouth muffling their cries as the hands hold increased to be bruising. Hero whimpered in pain, trying to shift their weight but settled down quiet after a moment. Settling on glaring at Supervillain.
“Leave them alone, Supervillain! They’ve nothing to do with this it’s between me and you!”
“Oh I disagree, Villain. They are the entire cause of your disobedience, here let me prove it to you. Other Villain!” Supervillain called, stepping away from Villain but not taking their eyes off them.
The sound of the door unlocking caught Hero’s attention, and Villain watched with baited breath as their nemesis walked into the room, grinning ear from ear.
“Hi Villain,” Other Villain with their usual smirk on their face and stupid condescending tone. Just seeing Other Villain made Villain’s blood boil.
“What, you want me to be like them?” Villain demanded, unable to stop the hurt colouring their voice. “I thought you said diversity is what gives us strength.”
“It does,” Supervillain mused, “but your heart seems to be too lenient with this stupid hero. It’s time you learned getting over them. Other Villain.”
“With pleasure,” Other Villain preened and stalked over to hero.
Villain sat forward in their seat instinctively as Other Villain grabbed Hero by the hair and yanked them up, the invisible arms keeping Hero subdued disappearing.
“Ah, Other Villain. You look radiant as—” before Hero could get another word out Other Villain slammed their chin against their knee. Villain tensed in their chair, but didn’t react as best they could. It’s fine. They were fine.
“I felt that one,” Hero said shortly after giving Villain something to be glad about. Hero’s inability to just shut up. “Do it again.”
Other Villain grinned. “With pleasure,” before they took their fist and beat it down on Hero’s face repeatedly. After the fourth or fifth punch Other Villain made a show of picking a slumped Hero off the ground just to punch them down again.
When the bruise started shining on Hero’s cheekbone and they smiled with a split lip, Villain leaned forward and said, “Hero enough.”
Hero didn’t even look at them. They kept their eyes on Other Villain. “Do you worst. It’s only a fair fight cause I got these cuffs on,” and hero spat blood on other villains shoes to add insult to injury.
“I can’t kill ‘em?” Other Villain asked.
Supervillain kept their eyes on Villain. “No killing. Everything up to killing is allowed.”
“In that case, I got a lil gift for you hero. Something to remember me by.”
“A gift?” Hero cooed, “you shouldn’t have. I didn’t even get you anything.”
“Oh trust me, this will do just fine.”
Other Villain pulled a pocket knife from their belt and villain straightened. They knew how much Other Villain sharpened those blades. Within an edge of deadly at the slightest brush.
“Wait, okay. Supervillain you proved your point okay? I got it. I won’t talk to hero anymore I promise okay?”
Villain could feel Hero’s eyes on them, but they were staring into Supervillain’s trying to use any of the humanity they had left.
“You learned your lesson?” Supervillain asked, holding a hand up to stop Other Villain.
“Yes. I did. I swear, okay? I won’t talk to hero again. I’ll cut off all contact, I promise.”
Supervillain stared hard at them for a moment. A long moment of silence stretched between them before the Supervillain dropped their hand with a sigh.
“You need to learn why, Villain. Right now you’re pleading for no lasting damage to be done for your hero because you care about them. But I know one thing that will keep you away from the likes of them,” Supervillain said softly. So softly Villain was nearly stunned by the gentleness their voice took on.
Supervillain placed a large hand on Villain’s cheek as they leaned down to be eye level with them, like how they used to talk to them when they were a child and needed to learn the hard way.
“And that’s through guilt.”
“Wait, no Other Villain— WAIT!”
Hero even looked abashed by the introduction of the blade and when Other Villain made the first cut through hero’s left eyebrow hero screamed. Other Villain heightening the pain with every brush of the blade along Hero’s face.
Villain was struggling so hard against the metal keeping him to the chair because he couldn’t just sit and watch helpless as Other Villain mutilated Hero in front of them. Eventually the chair stopped moving even as they struggled frantically and Villain only had to look at Supervillain’s hands to see the reason.
Hero tried to flash Villain a debonair smile, but Other Villain’s body blocked their small comfort to Villain.
“Supervillain please, you made your point. Let them go,” Villain cried as Hero passed out from the pain. Their limp body didn’t hit the floor however as supervillain held hero up by his invisible little puppet strings and other villain stood back to admire their sadistic work.
“It’s missing something,” they remarked. A cruel smile lit up their face and they said: “a signature.”
“No! Wait! Other Villain WAIT! Please!” Villain screamed, struggles renewed but all they could do was watch.
Other Villain lifted Hero’s hand and on the back of it they carved their initials deep and thick.
Villains voice was raw by the time Supervillain let Hero slump to the ground. Other Villain turned around, and with a nod from Supervillain cut the ropes holding Villain to the chair.
Villain got to their feet immediately and went to help Hero but Supervillain stepped into their path.
Towering.
Dark.
Unforgiving.
“If I hear you talk to or help Hero in anyway again Villain, I won’t keep Other Villain at bay.” Villain glared up at Supervillain, nostrils flaring in anger, and tried to sidestep them but Supervillain matched their stride. “Unless you want a dead Hero on your conscience, Villain, that order starts now.”
Supervillain nodded at Other Villain who grabbed Villain by the upper arm and dragged them to the door. Villain shrugged them off before they walked out the door, looking over their shoulder at the bloody slumped figure of Hero.
I’m sorry Hero, they thought, guilt cracking through their bones like lightning.

Supervillain leans against the wall, arms crossed in front of her chest. She rolls her eyes and kicks off the wall, walking toward Hero.
His head hangs low to his chest, if not for the rope tied around his stomach, he would be slumped over. His legs and arms are bound to the chair, keeping him from moving.
Supervillain grabs a fistful of his hair and pulls his head back, forcing him to look up at her. His eyes open and he yelps in pain.
“What the hell?” He shouts, trying to free himself from his bindings. Supervillain pulls down harder on his hair, pulling his attention to her. He stills and smiles, “Oh, it’s just you.”
She lets go of his hair and takes a step back. “You know why you’re here.”
“Oh, I thought you’d gotten over him!” Hero says, slouching forward slightly. “Tell me it’s not about Villain.”
“You need to pay for what you did to him,” she says, anger dripping like venom from her voice.
Hero chuckles and looks at her, his head tilted. “Don’t you mean what I’ve been doing to him?”
Supervillain’s face falls, she takes a step back and shakes her head. “What are you talking about?”
“Oh my god, you didn’t know.” Hero says. “How could you have known? I mean, I told you I was going to kill him. I told you I had killed him. I even sent you a fucking finger in the mail. But I thought somehow you knew.”
He laughs and runs his tongue along his teeth. Supervillain shakes her head, “You-” she exhales sharply. “What? You didn’t-”
Hero cuts her off, throwing his head back laughing. “I didn’t kill him!” he extends his neck as far as it goes and whispers. “He’s been with me the whole fucking time. And boy, can he scream.”
Supervillain sniffs and swallows the sobs swelling in her throat. “Where is he?”
“There’s an abandoned building…just off the highway about a mile and a half from here,” Hero says with a smile. “If you hurry, you might make it before…well, you’ll see.”
Supervillain runs out of the room, slamming the door behind her. She looks at the map tacked up on the wall and finds the building Hero was talking about.
She runs to the kitchen and grabs the first-aid kit out from under the sink and runs outside. She dials a number on her phone as she turns the key in her car.
“Hello?” the voice on the other end says.
“Medic?” she asks, voice shaking. She pulls out of the driveway and turns onto the highway.
“Supervillain?”
“I need you. Um…Villain needs you.”
There’s a moment of silence and Medic shuffles around, sending static through the line. “Villain’s dead, Supervillain. Remember?”
She shakes her head, “No, he’s not. I thought- I thought he was but…just. Please meet me at my place. Please. I- this is important to me.”
She waits, silently begging them to say something.
Medic takes a deep breath, exhaling heavily. “I’ll be there as soon as I can.”
“Please hurry.” she begs, hanging up and stepping out of her car.
The warehouse stands in front of her, boarded up. She runs around to the back of the building and peels a board off from the siding. She ducks inside and bites her bottom lip.
The air is musty with a tinge of iron floating around. Light filters in through holes in the roof, illuminating the dust in the air. A gas mask sits on a table, mostly clear of dust.
It catches Supervillain’s eye and she walks up to it, covering her mouth with the collar of her shirt. Behind the table, there are dozens of pictures tacked up on the wall.
They’re all of Villain in different positions, each more painful looking than the last.
In each picture, his body is contorted, ropes tied around his legs and arms, holding them in impossible positions. Bile rises in her throat.
She holds a fist to her mouth and swallows thickly, turning from the pictures.
In one corner of the building, she sees a lumpy mattress. She hurries over to it and sees Villain’s hair poking out from under a blanket. It’s longer, matted, and caked in blood and dirt, but it’s Villain’s hair.
She looks up and blinks, trying to fight the tears threatening to run down her cheeks.
A whimper pulls her attention and she drops to her knees. “Villain?”
She takes the blanket off of him and gasps.
His right leg is tied to itself, calf flush with his hamstring. His left foot is tied to his right thigh and his knee is secured against his chest with a bow, making it so that he’s lying with his back curled. His right arm is locked under the bend in his right leg, wrist tied to a rope around his neck. His left arm is tucked under his back, knuckles against his spine.
“Villain, it’s me, it’s Supervillain. I’m gonna get you untied.”
“No,” he shakes his head weakly and points at something with his right hand. “Loo…”
She searches for what he’s pointing at and freezes when she sees it.
A bag of sand is spilling onto the ground, slowly loosening a rope tied to another bag, significantly lighter than the emptying bag. If the smaller bag falls onto the pressure plate underneath it, it’ll trigger a gun trained on Villain.
Supervillain stands up and grabs the rope right above the small bag of sand. She cuts the rope with her dagger and sets it on the ground. She turns the gun away from Villain and goes back over to him.
“Ok, I took care of it, let’s get you out of here, yeah?” she nods to herself and falls to her knees, unsure of where to start.
Villain makes a pained sound, “Left arm. Start…with my left.”
She nods and gently coaxes his arm out from under him. The blood rushes back into his arm, turning it pink. Villain mutters and sucks air in through his teeth.
“What next?” she asks.
“Other arm,” he says, gasping.
She cuts the rope connecting his arm to the rope around his neck and sets it on the mattress at his side. She works her dagger blade under the rope around his neck and starts to saw away at it, forcing herself to ignore the bruises along his neck and collarbones. She unties the bow keeping his knee against his chest.
He falls back, head hitting a thinner spot in the mattress. He moans in pain and turns his head away from Supervillain.
“I’m sorry,” she whispers. “I should’ve-”
“I’m fine,” he interrupts. “Just get me out of here.”
She cuts the rope keeping his foot flat against his right thigh and his leg flops onto the mattress, blood flooding to the areas that the rope was.
Finally, she cuts the rope binding his right leg together. Villain breathes sharply and shakes his head, trying to keep the leg from moving.
“What are you doing?”
All he can manage is, “Hurts.”
“We have to go, Villain. Sidekick has to know Hero’s missing by now." She pulls him up and he tries to stand next to her, but collapses.
“I’m sorry,” he says, tears welling in his eyes. “I- I can’t stand.”
She shakes her head and loops an arm around his waist. “Totally fine, I’ll help you.”
He whimpers and tries to stand up, but as soon as he puts weight on his foot, he falls again.
“Ok,” Supervillain says, thinking. “I’ll just carry you.”
He nods and she puts an arm at the middle of his back and the back of his knees. She lifts him and carries him to where she came in at.
She looks at the hole she made, then at Villain, and back at the hole. “Any ideas?”
Villain nods and squeezes his eyes shut. “Put me down…” he exhales shakily and opens his eyes. “Then go through, and drag me out.”
“Right.” Supervillain says. She nods once and…does nothing.
“Supervillain.” Villain says. “Hurry please.”
“Right.” she says again.
This time, she squats and puts Villain on the ground close to the exit. She ducks through the hole and reaches for Villain’s hands. He flinches and pulls his hands away from her.
“Sorry.” He rushes. He puts his hands back where they were and lets her grab his wrists.
She drags him through the hole and picks him back up, holding him close against her. He curls against her, face buried against her shirt.
“Ok,” she says, stopping. “I’m going to put you in the backseat and drive home. Alright?”
All he can manage is a nod.
On the ride back to Supervillain’s house, Villain slowly stretches his arms and legs, letting the muscles get used to moving again. His eyes stay closed, the bright light of the sun unfamiliar to him after the months he’d spent in the warehouse.
The familiar bumps in Supervillain’s driveway alert him that they’re almost done driving and he sits up slowly. Supervillain opens his car door and holds her hand out to him. He takes it and she pulls him out of the car, looping her arm around his waist to keep him upright. Medic’s car is in the driveway, door open.
They jump up from their spot on the porch and rush over to Villain’s side. They fuss over him, checking him over for any serious wounds before pulling away.
Supervillain unlocks the door and pushes inside, forgetting about her guest.
Hero cranes his neck to look at who’s at the door. He smiles when he hears three sets of shoes.
“Aren’t you going to check on me?” He asks, voice booming through the house. “I assume you haven’t forgotten about me.”
Villain freezes, recognizing the voice instantly. His entire body tenses and he shakes his head. “No.” he stumbles back and his back hits the door. “No, what-what’s he doing here?”
Supervillain urges him forward, “You don’t have to worry about him, he’s tied up in the hallway. Just…get to the couch so Medic can look over you and I’ll deal with him.”
She drags him to the couch and sits him down, “I’ll be right back.”
Villain breathes rapidly, barely keeping upright. “Don’t- don’t let him…”
“I won’t. I promise.” Supervillain interrupts. She disappears into the hallway.
Medic kneels in front of Villain, unzipping their go-bag on the floor next to them.
“Hey,” they say, tapping his knee. “Deep breaths. Calm down, you need to trust Supervillain.”
Villain inhales shakily and nods, he exhales and pulls his legs to his chest. Medic does a quick once-over of him and wraps a blanket around his shoulders.
“You’re going to be alright, but it’ll take time. Your muscles are…”
“I’ve been tied up for five months, I’ve known they’re atrophied. As long as I’ll get better.” he says, pulling the blanket tighter around himself.
They nod, “You’ll have to work hard, and may never get back how you were before, but you’ll be alright.”
Villain sniffles and tears fall down his cheeks. He wipes them away with the blanket and curls more into himself. Medic zips their bag back up and sits next to him, arm slung over his shoulders.
“I brought you food! The canteen was doing chocolate cake for my birthday so I saved you a slice! There’s pizza too, oh, and I got salad in case you prefer being healthy.” The teen sidekick pulled a face. “No idea why anyone would, but hey, maybe that’s something I’ll grow into when I get older. I also got water, and coffee, and soda, and-”
“Kid,” the collared supervillain said softly. “You shouldn’t be doing this.”
“Why not? You’re on the team, right? You should get to celebrate when we celebrate.” Their bright expression hardened into something stubborn. “I don’t care what the others say. You don’t deserve to be punished all the time. It’s not fair.” They shoved the plates of food through the gap in the cell bars. “Eat the cake,” they demanded. “You deserve it.”
It had been a few more weeks and Hero had slowly been lowering the times they took Villain with them. They couldn’t handle their guilt anymore and seeing Villain actively trying to escape their gaze made them even more sad.
They tried to be as nice as they could without making it too obvious. Giving Villain a pillow and a mattress, since they were in here for a long time now. Taking Villain with them to the coffee stall after a mission every once in a while and going all out on the dinners they gave to them.
It didn’t make any difference. There didn’t even come a slight reaction out of Villain. It was “Yes, Hero.” or “No, Hero.” and nothing else except for some confused expressions sometimes.
Hero had tried to talk to them, watched over them. They gave Villain as much time as they needed, but without any results. Not that it was easy for them to open up to a villain.. but they tried at least.
Their eyes wandered over to the room where they kept Villain. They hadn’t spoken to them all day and wondered how Villain was doing in there.
Without thinking, their feet brought them to the door. Hero’s hand reached to open it, but they hesitated for a moment. Would this be too awkward? They shook their head and opened it, walking to lean against the bars of the cage and look at Villain.
“Would you like to eat something with me?” Hero asked. Their cheeks glowing red from shame as they waited for Villain to refuse or keep their mouth shut. Of course they did. Hero sighed, but they didn’t blame Villain. Instead they walked towards the cage’s door and opened it. Earning a quick confused look from Villain. The one look they had started to know all too well.
“You can go everywhere in the house,” Hero said. “Outside too, as long as you come back. Take a long walk if you want, you can take my dog with you if you would like that.” Villain sat up, looking even more confused now.
“I trust you,” Hero said quietly, looking away from Villain this time. “It’s okay.”
Hero then walked away to eat by themselves. They hadn’t expected Villain to react, but still they hoped it would have worked.
Hero finished cooking and sat down when Villain decided to join them, sitting down at the other side of the table.
“You haven’t hurt me in a long time,” they said quietly as they kept an eye on Hero to see their reaction. Hero nodded, their mouth full with the pasta that they quickly swallowed, almost choking themselves in it.
“Do I need to?” Hero asked, sounding as harsh as always. But this time Villain managed to see right through it.
“I know I misbehaved multiple times,” Villain addmitted, their voice still quiet as if talking like this alone was enough to be punished for. “Now that I’m looking back you didn’t hurt me for months in a row. What changed?”
Hero shrugged. “Nothing did, I just didn’t want to make it look suspicious by hurting you too often.”
“I think you’re making excuses,” Villain said, more confident than Hero had heard them in months. They weren’t wrong.
“What makes you think that?” Hero asked, amused by Villain’s new found confidence. Villain hadn’t talked this much to them in a long time. Especially not as freely as they did now.
“Because your excuse sucks,” Villain explained. They made a bit more distance between them and Hero as they said it, but Hero decided not to mention it.
“Oh?” Hero said, raising an eyebrow and letting their head lean on their hand. “How that so?”
“Not wanting to hurt me because it would look suspicious? You could have spread it more over the months. Use the same excuse you always use. You even could have hurt me when we’re back..”
“You sound like you’re begging me to hurt you again.” Hero stated, causing Villain’s eyes to grow big and taking all the confidence away.
“No.. NO! That’s not it,” Villain stammered. Their gaze went down to their hands laying restlesly on their lap. “Something changed. You’re being nice to me and I want to know why.”
“And why is that? What does it matter to you little pup?” Hero asked, using the same amused tone as they had been using the whole time.
“Because I like to know if I’m getting tricked or lured into something.”
Ah.. so that was it. Villain still didn’t trust them. Of course they didn’t.
“I can assure you that’s not it,” Hero said.
“Then what is it?”
Hero looked at their plate spinning their fork in their hand as they did so. What were they supposed to answer? ‘Yeah.. well, Villain, I, the toxic person who hurt you, think I fell in love with you’.
Instead they got to theri feet and gave Villain a plate too. “Take as much as you want.”
Villain opened their mouth to say something, but closed it again. They seemed irritated by Hero ignoring their question, but didn’t dare to poke at it again. They picked up their own fork and started eating too.
It stayed silent for a while. Both enjoying their food and looking at each other sometimes in between. It felt awkward and Hero didn’t know how to approach the situation. It was hard for them to open up towards Villain and they could feel their whole body resist against it. They knew they were harsh and they tried not to be, but they didn’t know how else to act.
“You’re not the first person to hurt me,” Villain suddenly said, breaking through the silence that had been holding them in their grip. Hero lowered their fork, looking at Villain with pure interest and surprise.
“The panic attack that first time? It was because they tried to touch me without a warning. The nightmares? All past trauma that I don’t want to talk about.”
“That’s fine, you don’t have to,” Hero said quietly, earning a surprised look from Villain. “But why are you telling this to me now?”
“You asked about it multiple times, laughing about it, but now? You seem like you have something on your heart that is bothering you. Maybe it helps if I open up first.”
Hero looked down at their plate again, ashamed that they really had been laughing about that. Ashamed of how they had been acting, of the person they had been towards Villain. Of course they never really found it funny. They just.. why did they even do it?
“You didn’t have to, I understand it’s something painful and personal for you,” Hero said, looking up at Villain again. “Sorry I laughed about it, I don’t even know why I did that.”
‘I was horrible to you,’ Hero wanted to add. But their chest felt so thight that their voice could break at any moment. Besides it would look pathetic.
There was an awkward silence where Hero didn’t dare to look at Villain. They considered their options, thinking about walking away from the conversation. Their head was throbbing and their thoughts were all over the place. When they looked up again they looked into hopeful eyes waiting for an answer.
“I didn’t want to hurt you anymore,” Hero eventually said. It was the safest answer they could give. It would not sound logical, but it wouldn’t make Villain see them too differently. It wouldn’t put Villain up for a choice.
“Why not? You did it so easily before.”
Hero swallowed, leaving the question hanging in the thick air between them. Why did they even think Villain wouldn’t ask about the ‘why’ of the story? They deserved an answer, Hero knew, but was it okay to tell them the truth and force them to answer it?
“Hero?”
“Because I was stupid,” Hero whispered, hoping that Villain wouldn’t ask any further for their own comfort.
“What do you mean stupid? What did you do?” Hero wanted to scream. Not only was it awkward to tell them, they didn’t want to hurt Villain with the truth. They hurt them enough. The last thing Villain needed was their torturer, their capturer, falling in love with them.
“I was stupid enough to fall in love with you.” They didn’t look at Villain when they said it. Scared to see the change in their eyes. Scared of facing them when they felt so ashamed, cheeks hot with embarrassment.
“I know I shouldn’t and you don’t have to tell me what you think about it, I don’t want to force you into that decision after what I did. I know it’s not good and awkward and..”
“And it can happen,” Villain interrupted them. “I’m a villain, don’t think I don’t know how it feels when you did something terrible to a person. Thank you for telling me. It explains a lot.” They gave Hero a small smile.
“It does?” Hero asked, not able to hide their surprise at how good Villain took this.
“Yes!” Villain exclaimed, almost laughing. “It explains why you stopped hurting me, why you gave me things, why you checked up on me. It explains why you started to care, why you were giving me space, because I noticed that you kept your distance. I always wondered why you waited so long for an answer to your questions even though I never gave one.” Villain laughed out loud now, visibly relieved.
“Damn I even know why you just opened the doors and told me you trusted me, a villain.” Hero smiled awkwardly, rubbing their neck. “I did all of that, didn’t I?”
At least they didn’t say anything about the times Hero had been sitting in the doorway watching them. Even Hero knew how weird that would sound.
“I did something else too,” Hero admitted, causing Villain to raise an eyebrow. “I hoped you would see if you walked around the house for a bit, but.. you have your own room. Like an actual room with your own bed and desk and closets with new clothing.”
Villain’s mouth jaw dropped in disbelief and Hero couldn’t help but laugh. “If you need or want me to add anything just ask. Just make sure you don’t let the dog in if you don’t want her on your bed, since your room is in my old workspace downstairs.”
“Thank you,” Villain said, so stunned that they looked close to breaking down in happy tears.
“I should have done it from the start,” Hero said quietly, letting their gaze go down to their own hands. “It’s your right.” They continued, getting to their feet and walking until they stood behind Villain. “Do you need a hug? If you want one?” Villain nodded a bit unsure at Hero’s offer. Glad Hero had remembered about touching without a warning.
“I will make sure you will be okay from now on.”
suddenly the van's speed accelerated tossing everyone back as the van noticeably jerked side to side as though it would topple over.
Sparky hardly had time to brace himself before he was on the floor of the vehicle with a loud thud and a sharp hiss.
He groaned when the van once again shook causing the young villain to flail about before Hero managed to grab sparky to sit him upright.
sparky grumbled a low "never thought I'd ever be so willing to sleep at curfew" under his breath was he tucked his legs closer to his body.
Sheriff Malory was standing up stepping over villain as he got to the mesh divider to speak with the officer up front before loud yelling dispatched through the radio once again.
though staticky and too grainy to understand the words being said the struggle was diffident at the sound of guns firing and sickly wet crunch of bones followed by screams that were shortly silenced by a 'shch-welsh' sound of liquidly flesh.
"Sheriff." there was a long pause of udder silence as the voice came over the radio before Sparky lifted his head a lightning speed and shouted "SUPERVIL-MmmmFFm?!!?"
Hero had pulled the electric villain to their chest with one arm wrapped holding sparky in a chokehold the other pressing their head down to force them to muffled silence.
"THE FUCK-" They cut themselves off now talking to someone else on the other side of the radio, most likely Villain. the voice then returned once again calm with undertone anger.
"Villain will be retrieving Other Villain and if you value your life you will hand over him to them or else the 'mildly' toxic bio hazardous mixture of liquified experimental biological agents within Villain's system will be released. your choice."
just as if on cue the sound of the other vehicles being torn and steering of the road and crashing as multiple heroes from each ran out no longer trying to fight the villain in such state.
the vans closest to the vehicles they currently occupied came ramming in to the side of the van as another over to the left crashed a lit up in flames.
Malory gripped his fingers into the mesh as the driver accelerated the speed again, out of great misfortune was there a high fencing along the highways keeping them from escaping onto a neighboring road.
that was until the driver made a reckless decision and spotted a sign perfectly standing in the best angle.
The officer turned the last minute as the van behind them barely scrapped past.
"HANG ON!" was the only warning given as they drove off the highway. The vehicle went up the ramp and was now free falling onto the fairly lower road.
Hero got tossed up and the impact of the landing alone was enough to cause them to crash into Sparky which both were on the floor in the back tangled in limbs both groaning and shoving the other off though not exactly urgent; that is not until Hero yelped and shoved sparky down and away from him.
Sparky hissed in pain before an electrical static buzzing sound eliminated the space when he suddenly gasped quickly followed by his own blood curdling scream.
that buzzing was his electrical powers activating from adrenaline but the suppresser still being on would keep him from using his powers.
Except.
The band was likely either damaged in the fall or his powers were frying the inside because electricity danced over his own skin as he twisted and sobbed.
Hero caught themselves awkwardly on one of the seats along the wall of the van. Their hand reaching their face as they moved their jaw.
The taser that was in their hand earlier had skidded across the floor.
Villain rubbed the back of his ankle against his leg before hissing words that were barely heard past his gas mask. "the fuck?! your thick headed skull made of titanium??"
Sherriff Mallory took that sudden moment of weakness to his advantage as he was quick to throw hands with the scrawny skeleton in baggy cloths.
Sherriff Mallory had an advantage given his larger frame through surprisingly Villain had moves. and cards up his sleaves. well not cards but he did have another knife that he was skillfully slashing the sheriff with.
Mallory recoiled letting his grip on Villain go the moment the blade made contact with his shoulder.
another ruthless gash to side had him stumbling back nearly stepping on Sparky who was somehow still holding their breath the best they could.
something the heroes agency had learned early on was that villain and sparky had been trained to hold their breath incase of chemical related situations.
hero ran up to Villain wielding their own knife, save for the fact it was a survivalist multi-tool that just so happened to also have a knife.
Hero held the thick metal as they managed to get villain to start back pedaling.
Or at least hero thought they had but Villain was only getting close enough to Sparky to be able to drop a gas mask with in arms reach of the captive villain.
Sparky reached his arm out to grab the gas mask, his hands trembled in pain as he put it on.
The bandages along Sparky's arms caught Villain's attention in the corner of his intensely dark tired eyes as he pulled two more knives out.
"Do you two really want to die over this?"
"you say that like you've made progress in killing us." Hero's words tumbled out before they even processed a thought. Recklessly unfiltered as always.
Villain rolled his shoulders leaning his head back as he sighed deeply annoyed. A foggy mist quickly began leaking from villain's body past his clothing.
"Fine. have it your way."
Mallory stood back holding onto the large gash of his shoulder trying to stop the bleeding.
Hero put a hand up to their gas mask to be sure it was placed correct before Villain rammed into hero full body force. the force of course being much more than expected from such frame.
Hero grabbed villain's shoulders tight before body slamming him into the side of the wall. The impact alone was enough to shake the chained hooks out of the van just enough for the driver to escape.
the enter van jerked forward sending everyone stumbling back. Villain nearly fell out the back of the van if it wasn't for Hero pinning him to the wall of the van.
Villain clearly didn't get why Hero was just holding him their- the closer one was to the gasses the more likely it would get in their system.
That was until he saw Mallory walking over with a power suppresser bracelet and a pare of cuffs.
Villain tried fighting against Hero's grasp but his movements were already slowing down. His skin was sticky from sweat as his body fevered from the experimental biological agents still coursing through his system.
Hero slammed Villain down on the ground taking the bracelet and sliding it easily onto the villain's wrist already moving to get the cuffs on him.
"Let. go!" Villain's words of protests were ignored. What wasn't ignored what when a sudden shock wave racked through everyone in the van.
everyone turned to look at Sparky how had electricity dancing along his fingers and the taser Hero had dropped at the start of the fight.
Sparky's body and mind both far too exhausted to use his powers for long. Proof being how his eyes looked like they were going to roll into the back of his head.
Villain used that moment of distraction to headbutt Hero and slam past the Sherriff before jumping out the van.
after what felt like forever everyone was situated and now all that was left was retrieving the prisoner. sheriff Malory went back to the cell motioning for the guard to get him out.
the guard took up a key and opened the door before marching into the cell and grabbing the power restrained villain by the arm not waiting for them to stand before pulling them to the door.
sparky yelped when he nearly tumbled over from the manhandling but didn't refrain much aside from nearly bumping into the sheriff after getting pushed forward.
Malory frowned at the rough handling not to mention the black eye the villain already had along with the bruising on his face.
"I advise you, sir, to refrain from causing injury to any unarmed person or prisoner." Malory said before reaching for the cuffs on his waist belt.
"of course sir" was the only response the cell guard gave before grabbing Sparky's arms and pulling them behind his back- to which the villain had a lot to say about as he grumbled (words consisting of mostly slurs and curses) and stomped his boot down as the sheriff slipped the cuffs onto his wrists tightening them a bit.
Malory held onto Sparky's shoulders as they guided them out to the back of the hero headquarters and to the van. Sparky was now humming a toon as he walked, muttering odd phrases every now and then. glancing over his shoulder to Malory he muttered;
"these cuffs are kinda tight."
"nope. not loosening them." despite saying that Malory glanced down at the villain's cuffs to be sure it wasn't too tight which it wasn't.
"ups ya go." Sparky was suddenly lifted up and into the back of the van which was rather high off the ground and he would have had to of hoisted himself up even if he had his hands free.
though that didn't stop the startled laughter that escaped from him- whether that be from nervous laughter or solely from being picked up Malory couldn't have known.
An officer sat in the front of the van, hero sat by the back door while the electric villain sat deeper over by the panel separating the back from the front. Sheriff sat beside hero, offering the tablet he grabbed from the front just a moment ago, as he set spoke into his radio. "positions."
voices came through the radio. "roads been cleared. head back to attend the escort or remain put?"
"remain put sir."
"yes sir."
the radio's static died out once the conversation ended. hero watched the multiple dots on screen.
".....sooo..... how long till we get their?" Sparky had asked while looking around the windowless walls before his electric green eyes wondered over to the hero and sheriff which neither seemed to want to speak to him.
Malory spoke up after realizing if he didn't no one was going to. "at least 30 minutes. longer if we run into any complications."
"what kinda complications?"
"ones that your not required to know."
"rude...."
suddenly the van's speed accelerated tossing everyone back as the van noticeably jerked side to side as though it would topple over.
