mermay 1/3- "rainbow trout fish"
happy Final Week of Mermay!!!! here’s Lexi, a Capwearer Mer based on the Sockeye Salmon!
Capwearers, also known as merrows, use a red cap to transform (although some use a hooded cloaklet made of salmon skin instead, depending on their family's heritage). The cap is merely traditional as they possess shapeshifting magic within, and use the cap (or other object) to channel their power. Tend to have an easier time switching between forms than pearlweepers or landwalkers. They have lost some mer features (no ear fins, reduced hand webs) in order to make transformation easier, but are still very fishy overall. Their tails are described as salmon- and trout-like. Can shapeshift into a third unique form as well that often appears larger and "scarier" (large tusks, cow-like horns, large claws, hairier), as a means to deter predators or impress other capwearers. Some retain one or more of these features in their baseline mer form as well. They meet up with their own kind once a year during migrations, but do not form pods otherwise. They inhabit a fairly small part of the ocean, native to the North Atlantic and Irish Sea, and rarely seen outside of those areas.
