ifcomp 2018 notes: Careless Talk

This is a mostly linear Twine short story about being secretly gay in a WW1 or 2-esque British Navy. It's a story about secrets, lies, trust, and discrimination...

The bulk of the story is a conversation between the protagonist and the ship's priest. The protagonist is a magic user (this is an alternate history apparently, where there’s magic and shit) who is a closeted gay man, and he's confessing to the priest about his feelings. Over the airwaves, he's heard about a murder of another gay man, and he suspects that the priest is secretly a homophobe who's going to report him or allow others to commit violence against him.

It's a pretty good story, as far as these things go. There are a bunch of layers to it; I can’t say that I was surprised at the twist though. The plot is entirely linear, as far as I can tell, with choices mainly for embellishment and pacing.

As an aside, I'm sort of tired of fictionalized versions of the British empire (this is not necessarily a criticism of this game in particular). Sometimes it feels as if every other Choice of Game takes place in a fictionalized Victorian England. See: every vaguely steampunk game. Why? Why do people romanticize or whitewash this era of horrific imperialism, racism, etc...? There are so many other historical eras one could pick from... Also, I don’t know that the magical aspects of the story really served any purpose over a straight historical one.

Overall this isn't super innovative or interactive, but it's a well written and constructed story that serves its purpose.
