Wait wait Carlin didn’t know how to fill out basic paperwork? What were the questions she didn’t know the answer to? I’m intrigued.

So if any of these segments were to stand alone, they wouldn’t be overly unusual or noteworthy even. The overall theme in this episode was that Carlin and Evan were becoming adults through marriage, which doesn’t vibe with me, because feeling like a child going into marriage is a gross message that was made out to be normal in the episode.

These were moments were I recognized the dependency Carlin has with her family, and how she leaned into that dependency, the idea that she was hopeless to answer (somewhat) simple questions. I’d encourage y’all to watch the episode in context before coming to the inbox with these examples from the episode.

-”Yes we have to match outfits to go get our marriage license”

-”If it weren’t for my mom and coordinator we would have probably forgot about our marriage license. It’s like this big thing that’s almost like sealing the deal. That’s it, you’re about to like, become adults. It’s scary.”

-Jokes that she didn’t know if she was born in Tennessee.

(again, none of this is a crime, but indicated to me that she was going to play up her lack of knowledge)

-She makes a mistake with Gil’s name (says Gil instead of WIlliam or Gilvin, which is an understandable mistake... He’s not my dad though.)

-Says it was good Gil was there to answer all the questions, she wouldn’t have remembered that he was born in North Carolina.

-Stumbles over whether her mom’s first name was Kelly or Kelly Jo, Gil has to confirm it’s legally Kelly.

-Seemed surprised that they would ask her for her SSN, “I don’t know how people remember that many numbers” “Who knew that literally you had to know all these numbers that are related to your name, apparently he’s had it memorized his whole life. Maybe I’m just bad at memorizing. I mean, I don’t even know your phone number, I just click your number on there.”

-Evan says “we would’ve had to make a lot of phone calls if GIl hadn’t have been there.”

Again, I’d encourage y’all to watch the episode in context if you’re curious about what I was seeing throughout this episode. I wanted to provide this clarification since I’ve alluded to this episode and how it has influenced the way I see Carlin’s maturity, but I didn’t start the immaturity conversations and would be happy to move away from them. -Suz
