Hopefully I haven't been keeping this too quiet but I simply cannot stand the forced good-girl-friend-turned-slutty-turncoat face-heel-turn P.C. Cast used to make Erin Bates a villain in the later part of the series, only to have her die somehow redeemed for no reason. In all the time since, in fact, I still cannot comprehend what kind of point P.C. was trying to make here.

Seriously, does anyone who goes here have a singular clue, who might be able to explain it?

It doesn’t matter if someone has four children or zero children—getting 4 surgeries to correct a painful medical problem is horrible, and possibly facing infertility is awful even if you already have 4 children. Even if Erin doesn’t face infertility in the future (which is unlikely), she might go into early menopause in her 20s, which has a huge number of unpleasant side effects. It’s really psychopathic and anti-feminist to make fun of a woman for having medical problems with her reproductive system. There is no evidence that this was caused by COVID-19 or has anything to do with it. 

People saying, “Yeah, but she doesn’t take COVID seriously...” need to understand that it’s legitimate to criticize the Bates family for not social distancing, but it is illegitimate to make fun of Erin for having ovarian cysts and an oophorectomy. People don’t always get sick because there is something morally wrong with them. 

Also: it’s okay to grieve your fertility even if you already have children. It’s okay to be sad that the choice of when to finish reproducing was not made by you. Especially when you were raised in an extremely religious society that places immense pressure on you to have many children, losing fertility can be traumatizing. The Bateses are people too. Erin Paine has feelings. She’s not a robot.
