When Thomas received word that a family had moved into their old cabin, he couldn't quite believe what he was hearing - finally, after so much toil and effort, people were slowly starting to move into the Bay. On a fine day the family travelled back to their old home, eager to meet their new neighbours. Iain and Claire MacKenzie were a young Scottish couple, looking for a fresh start in America with their daughter Caroline. Thomas was quickly taken with Iain's frank, open nature, and the families got on very well indeed. Both sets of parents were pleased with the prospect of friends for their children, and plans to visit again were quickly made.

“A Beautifully Foolish Endeavor” by Hank Green, the sequel to “An Absolutely Remarkable Thing”, which I loved, and I pre-ordered this one because I am so excited for how the story continues. “One Year of Ugly” by Caroline Mackenzie is contemporary fiction about a Venezuelan family living illegally in Trinidad, and the tumultuous year that follows this arrangement. “The Party Upstairs” by Lee Conell is about a single day in the life of the residents of an apartment building, among them the daughter of the super, who deals with issues of class and her parents’ expectations. And “Girl, Serpent, Thorn” by Melissa Bashadoust is a queer YA fantasy about a girl who kills with her touch and is therefore forced into loneliness and isolation.

Published on July 9th, “Loveless” by Alice Oseman - what can I say? It is Alice Oseman, it is ace-representation, I have pre-ordered it. That’s all. July 14th sees “Utopia Avenue” by David Mitchell hit the shelves, a historical fiction novel about a strange underground band and their rise to fame. Coming out July 21st is “The Year of Witching” by Alexis Henderson, a YA fantasy about a girl living in a puritanical society who finds hidden powers within her to rebel. And lastly, also on July 21st, “Pew” by Catherine Lacey, a novel in which a "genderless, racially ambiguous” mute stranger brings out the secrets of the small town that host them and fills their blank identity with ideas of their own.

The MacKenzies had become regular guests at the Alcotts' farm, providing much needed company. Ever since the news of war had reached the Bay, it had been hard to discuss anything else. Hearing about it from Iain and Claire, however, was starting to ignite more of Elisabeth's idealism. There had been a reason she agreed to move out here with Thomas, a wish to create something new and carve out their space in a young country.

Listening to Claire's enthusiastic conversation, she began to wonder whether she really was thinking too much of the risks. After all, the chances of success were high, and with Iain already resolved to go and fight, Thomas would not be going alone. By the end of the night, she was quite resolved: if Thomas still wanted to go, she wouldn't oppose him.

What a unique and often laugh out loud story this was! This book has all the drama of a great soap opera, while at the same time showing the terrors and hardships that can face illegal immigrants. I will say this book started out intense, then kinda dragged a smidge, and then was unputdownable for the last half! I LOVED romance between Roman and and Yola! The Palacio family was full of interesting and dynamic characters that made up the colorful tapestry of this story. If you ever were a fan of the tv show Weeds, this is a book for you! It has the same tense situations combined with dark sarcastic humor and a side of romance. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
