Mumbleshipping: Seto Kaiba x Ryou Bakura x Duke Devlin

My ride or die OT3. They make so much sense that I've already written a ton of propaganda for them, so suffice it to say that I think these three nerds with daddy issues balance each other perfectly.

Rollshipping: Ryou Bakura x Duke Devlin x Joey Wheeler

Ryou loves a dice-based game, Duke invents a dice-based game, and Joey uses dice-based cards. That's the origin of the name: they all roll dice. I love the idea of Joey healthy protecting his pretty boyfriends from all their admirers.

Doubtshipping: Ryou Bakura x Marik Ishtar x Seto Kaiba

I think this could be really cute in a setting where they're all trying to break and move forward.

Dandelionshipping: Ryou Bakura x Joey Wheeler x Yugi Mutou

Ryou and Yugi both wished on their Millennium Items for friends, and Joey fulfills that wish.

Carryshipping: Ryou Bakura x Joey Wheeler x Tristan Taylor

Joey and Tristan take turns carrying their puffball of a boyfriend when he gets tired.

These are the three modern characters with the most significant past incarnations from Egypt, and the entire show is about these three being haunted and hunted by those past selves in different ways.

Yes, I made this one up, because I like to think of Kaiba keeping these two weirdos as pets in his mansion. They understand each other when it comes to the occult and spiritual stuff they're interested in, and then they've got Kaiba to find their research and give them headpats.

Teaseshipping: Joey Wheeler x Seto Kaiba x Ryou Bakura

I like to think that Ryou would end up teasing both of these boys for their opinions on ghosts/spirits.

This was originally going to be for day 3 of Rarepair Week 2024, and the prompt I chose was Hurt/Comfort. @mywaywardcupcake posted a HC once about Tristan having nightmares about losing Ryo and/or Joey and I couldn't not adopt it, so credit to them for the idea! (Seriously you two stop with the near-death/sometimes ACTUAL death experiences for five minutes, your boyfriend and his protective instincts can't handle it. 😟)

That makes, what, 6 Carryship fanworks on the entire internet now? Maybe 7? Wonder if there'll be 10 by the end of next year... 🤔 (Unless each of my Sims screenshots counts separately?)

Okay, you get a fantasy AU for this one! Hope you like fantasy!

Ryou is an elven warlock (spooky boy supreme sold his soul to Zorc for magical powers), Tristan is a human paladin (strong moral compass, lawful good), and Joey is a dragonborn warrior (dragon!Joey gives me life, and he's a fighter at heart). They're on a quest to find the Magical MacGuffin, or maybe just being adventurers for the fun of it, and get lost in the woods on their way to their next destination. While lost, they encounter a band of highwaymen and while together they manage to fight them all off, Joey still takes an arrow to the side! Oh no! He tries so hard not to let it show how much the injury hurts him, because he's a big tough guy, but Tristan calls him out and forces them to set up camp at least temporarily so that he can safely remove the arrow from the wound and get it properly dressed. Ryou is fascinated with the injury (he's not the slightest bit put off by gore) and tries to comfort Joey with the assurance that he's going to have a really cool scar as a result. When Joey is patched up, they head back to the town they'd just left in order to find a healer. Ryou keeps the arrowhead as a souvenir, Tristan gives Joey a stern talking to about being careful and not taking risks (that's how he shows his care), and Joey is just very embarrassed to have been caught by the arrow at all. Once he's feeling more better, Tristan tells Joey that he can always make up whatever fun story he wants for explaining the scar, and that does cheer him up quite a bit.

Like, think about it. Puff, Buddy and Protect are all adorable ships on their own. You have the sweet, polite little nerd who loves all things creepy and the former gang member with a heart of gold who's terrified of the occult and also happens to be a nerd. You have the two lovable idiots who've been best friends for years, who know each other like they know themselves. You have the tough-looking guy who's actually a massive softie and the gentle, fragile-looking cornflake with all this hidden inner strength. So you put all three of them together and there's this whole sun, moon and Earth dynamic where their personalities complement each other in different ways and it just works!!!

Joey and Tristan would always be there for Ryo and remind him as many times as they need to that they want to be there for him - no more disappearing into the Isolation Pit for him if they can help it. I think he'd bring out their softer sides; partly because he's so heckin' adorable, but also because he wouldn't judge them for showing vulnerability.. In the past, they've both had problems with toxic masculinity and felt pressured to act tough, and while they've both come a long way by the time I usually imagine the Carryship setting sail, they probably still have some lingering Stuff. But Ryo's just... himself. I don't think he cares about whether or not he measures up to some made-up standard, and he wouldn't care if other people do either. I see him as a good, sympathetic listener - if anything's bothering them, they can talk to him about it, but he won't push them to talk if they're not ready. (You know how he spent most of the Téa vs. Mai Duel comforting Yugi? Yeah.) Based on some of his dialogue from his Duel Links event (and not just with Joey), I HC that he's really generous with compliments too. If he has something nice to say, he just says it, so there's this kind of funny, kind of interesting contrast between how sincerely he expresses his feelings for Joey and Tristan and how sweet they are to him, and how those two act towards each other: i.e. not too differently to how they did before they got together. They might be a bit more openly affectionate (mainly physically), but they're still Joey and Tristan, and they'll still bicker almost as much as always, 😂!

In between the bickering, Joey would be *vocal* about how much he loves them, and often cheesy as heck (Ryo finds it cute; Tristan "secretly" does too but covers it with a sprinkling of snark. Joey is not fooled in the slightest. Tristan doesn't really mean for him to be.) He's quick to cheer them up or offer encouragement when they're having a bad time, and I can see him encouraging Tristan to stand up to his dad about the factory situation and pursue his own dreams - they deserve to be happy and he'll fight anyone who says otherwise (not necessarily physically because he's matured since canon, but still!) He and Ryo would be so cute nerding out over games together, 🥰. He gets to enthusiastic about things (he threw himself right into that first Monster World session) and that would mean a lot to Ryo. (Tristan's willing to join in, but he's not as passionate about it as they are.) With his interest in model-building, I think he'd appreciate the work Ryo puts into his dioramas too. And they can both be Odd Cornflakes at times - Ryo might be the Weird One of the three, but Joey did call the original Duel Disk a "cup ramen thing", 🤣. I bet they'd occasionally wake Tristan up talking about whatever completely random thought popped into one of their heads at 2am, 😂.

Tristan will keep them grounded and be the voice of reason as usual... unless he's getting swept up in whatever Joey's doing, because let's face it, with these three, there *will* be moments when no one has the brain cell and it's just skittering around unattended. (Do brain cells skitter? Serious questions asked on my bloggo.) He's sometimes a bit confused by Ryo, but that doesn't bother him. He's accepted that there are some things he just won't get, so he's just going to concentrate on doing what he does best: loving and supporting Ryo unconditionally, as well as keeping a close eye on any occult stuff that's going on - *no one* needs to get possessed again. (Joey will watch from a safe distance, (read: "over Tristan's shoulder like when he found out that Shadi was a ghost", 😂), but no matter how terrified he is, he'll still be ready to take action if things start to go wrong.) If anything's wrong with either of them (and he always notices), he'll go out of his way to help, even if all he can do is listen, which happens more often than he'd like, especially with Ryo. It's not always easy, though, so they make sure to let him know they appreciate him, and be there for him when he needs it.

Overall: 200/10, can't believe no one named it before I did.

Thiefshipping

It's been a while since I've really thought about them, but this is probably my favourite ship for both of them, mostly because of the fandom's portrayals. None of these options really fit them for me, though? 😅 They're an entertaining mess. A pair of heckin disasters. XD

Well, I haven't seen much art for it, but I like the idea of it! It'd be interesting to see how it happens, with the whole brainwashing thing and Joey's tendency to hold grudges. They'd definitely have to address that, 😅. (Oh, and about your reply to my ask: what exactly is a hamster-like death? 😂)

CARRYSHIPPING

1. What made you ship it?

@kira-quartz of course! I had never even considered it before, but I discovered this right as I was starting to explore Buddyshipping, so the timing was perfect.

2. What are your favorite things about this ship?

I think kira said it best when they said that Tristan is the earth to Joey's sun and Ryou's moon, and there's no better way to explain their dynamic.

3. Is there an unpopular opinion you have about this ship?

This ship only works for me with Joey still a half-feral street-kid.

DEATHSHIPPING

1. Why don't you ship it?

I had no familiarity with the manga at all for my first few years of being into Yugioh, so my impression of Ryou formed completely without any of the "this boy likes dark and occult things and is such a weirdo." I also don't see Yami Marik as being anything other than an entity of hated and vengeance and power, and so he's not really capable of feeling anything else? That's just my understanding of the character, and I don't trust that Yami Marik wouldn't hurt him (but I still wrote Deathshipping into my Tendershipping fic because that whole story was a challenge to myself to see those ships differently). I will still like some Deathshipping posts and content, but I wouldn't say that I ship it.

2. What would have made you like it?

Maybe if Yamima weren't so thoroughly violent and deranged in every moment of his canon appearance, I could dig it, and maybe if I'd been exposed to weirdo!Ryou earlier on, I would be more into it.

3. Despite not shipping it do you have anything positive to say about it?

I do think it can be really interesting as a background ship to Thiefshipping, because it feels so unlikely. I also like the idea of Yamima defeating Marik and Bakura but leaving Ryou behind and freed from the Ring. The size difference is definitely 😘👌

DRAGONSHIPPING

1. What made you ship it?

Honestly, just the deep respect that the characters have for each other in canon, and how they help each other grow. It's a very low-key ship for me, in that I don't seek out the content or think about it at all, but when I do see it, I give it a thumbs up. 👍

2. What are your favorite things about this ship?

The whole thing about Joey definitely beating Yami in a duel to win back his Red-Eyes card and then never mentioning it, not once, not even to Kaiba. There's just such respect and humility in the fact that Joey keeps it a secret and doesn't think any less of him for the loss. These are two dudes that will give their all in a fight against each other and love each other for it, even when they think the other is completely wrong.

3. Is there an unpopular opinion you have about this ship?

Yami bottoms to Joey, you can't convince me otherwise. He's a pillow princess.

MUMBLESHIPPING

1. What made you ship it?

I couldn't stand having to choose between Euroshipping and Minorshipping (and Mastershipping), so I just squished them all together. My very old FFN fic, just called Mumbleshipping, actually started out as a one-shot that I wrote as a challenge to myself of "let me find really obscure yugioh ships and write them for fun" (that's why the list of ships I've written is so long and includes things like Revenge, Lavender, Midriff, and Vengeance). But then I was like, "this really does make sense though, so what if I just... Continue the scene?" And it turned into the mumble boys being on vacation in an Italian villa, living the good life, Ryou and Duke forcing Seto to stop working and truly relax, until I got restless and threw in a whole lot of drama for each of the boys in turn, and lots of Mokuba being a cutie and everyone being horny and traumatized.

2. What are your favorite things about this ship?

Everything. The shared dad trauma. The way they're all on the fringe of the Yugi friend group. Mokuba becoming a surrogate sibling to Duke and Ryou. The way the four of them settle into becoming a family. The fact that they don't have all shared experiences: Duke doesn't know Duelist Kingdom, Ryou doesn't know most of Battle City or season four or Noah's Virtual World, neither of them know the Legendary Heroes arc. Duke doesn't know anything at all about Death T. They all have enough fuck-uppery going on in their lives, and they all have their own ways to deal with it and not give up. They're good for each other, and you can't convince me otherwise.

3. Is there an unpopular opinion you have about this ship?

*booming voice* I AM THIS SHIP. I AM THE CAPTAIN AND THE SAIL. I REVIVED THIS SHIP FROM THE ASHES OF OBSCURITY. Do you seriously think there's a popular ANYTHING about this ship?
