SQÜRL and Man Ray
SQÜRL is the name of the alt-music project of filmmaker Jim Jarmusch and multi-instrumentalist Carter Logan. The two have performed together internationally and have enjoyed some “hits” in that unusual niche way that exists in contemporary popular music (where having your video viewed by more than 1,000 people online renders you a “phenomenon” of the current scene). The duo obviously gain visibility from Jarmusch’s notable career as a filmmaker, so when it was announced that the two would perform at the Art Institute, providing music for silent films by Man Ray, it seemed like a juicy event.
It was certainly a crowded one. When we arrived for the event (a full 30 minutes early), the huge line of people standing in the cold outside was moving forward into the Art Institute, so we didn’t have to wait too long to get in. But by the time the concert began, Rubloff Auditorium was jammed. I ran into at least half a dozen people I knew (former colleagues, former students, friends). It seemed to be the hottest ticket for a cold Sunday night (and on Superbowl Sunday!).
Four of Man Ray’s silent films were screened. I had seen L’toile de mer (1928) before. It stars Man Ray’s mistress, Kiki de Montparnasse (aka Alice Prin) and André de la Rivière in a Surreal, plotless film about a man and a woman in a relationship. Even to say the work is plotless overstates it: the film is a collection of strange images, mostly shot through so much Vaseline that they are almost unintelligible. It mixes an odd sense of “realism” with a dreamlike quality we can only call Surreal. I had high hopes that the music would contribute to this dreamy imagery.
I found SQÜRL’s accompaniment to be loud. Mostly that, and hardly anything else. I guess it could be argued that providing ambient noise music for a plotless film was appropriate. But I kept thinking how much more interesting it would have been with a score for, say, string quartet, written by a contemporary French composer, say Charles Koechlin. Three more films followed; pretty much the same story each time. I had taken advantage of the offer of free earplugs, and even so, I left with my ears ringing (worse than usual). Man Ray’s films may not have a conventional narrative arch, but they are far from shapeless noise. Alas, I’m afraid I found the music demanded that the images accompany it, rather than the other way around.
