“On the count of three, you can open your eyes.,” Amy said enthusiastically closely followed by a giggle that was echoed by a familiar wee voice from the same direction. “One…two…THREE!”
Jonah obeyed and immediately saw his 9 month old dressed from head to toe in a bumblebee costume. He laughed at the sight of his little curious face looking back at him. Amy had been so proud of her purchase and teased Jonah that she would not reveal what it was until Halloween had arrived.
“Are you a little bee?” Jonah outstretched his arms for Amy to hand Carter over.
Carter blew on his lips to make a buzz sound but all that came out was raspberry with his tongue which caused both his parents to laugh.
“Bzzzz” Jonah repeated and kissed his son on the cheek. “The cutest bee I’ve ever seen.” He swung him around to face Amy who was smiling broadly. “Did you pick this because of me?”
“Whadya mean?” Amy feigned aloofness.
“Oh come on, Amy. I know you did this because it reminds you of my costume that one time.”
“Did you dress up like a bumblebee?” A coy smile just barely contained threatened to break.
“No, actually. If you remember, and I know you do,” he nodded his head rapidly, “I was the disappearing bee crisis so-“
“Um you were a bumbl-“ she stopped short. “Oh yeah.” Amy rolled her eyes at his annoying clarification. Carter waved his arms up and down and continued to blow on his lips.
“Aha, see!” Jonah triumphantly pointed at her.
“Whatever, you were a bee.”
“And if I also remember correctly, Carter, your mom wanted me so bad back then that she tried to sabotage me dating another woman.”
Amy crossed her arms and looked up to the ceiling in a huff. “Oh like you weren’t secretly harbouring feelings for me at that time too!”
Jonah’s smug smile quickly turned embarrassed. “Wha, I I was just, you know-“ he desperately trying to think of a rational explanation, Jonah conceded. “Yeah that’s probably true.” Jonah bounced his son in his arms and contemplated their awkward history. “Hey, why didn’t we get together right after your divorce? I mean, we were both free. How dumb were we?” He looked to Amy affectionately.
“Pretty dumb.” Amy drew in closer mirroring his sweet expression. He leaned down and they embraced softly.
It was a tender moment that was abruptly interrupted by another of Carter’s ill timed raspberries, “Buphzzzzzzzz”.
Amy and Jonah both laughed.
“Come here, you.” Amy grabbed Carter back from his dad. “Let’s go get and get mommy’s flower costume on. She turned towards the doorway.
“You’re going as a flower?” Jonah said bemused.
“Yes, because every bumblebee needs a flower, Jonah. It’s called nature.” Her airy voice travelled down the hall.
“Does this mean I get to deflower you later?” He called out to her. No reply came. Jonah turned around to find Parker standing in the doorway where Amy once stood.
“What’s deflower mean?” the 4 year old asked.
Maybe I missed something, or my brain is just not computing past seasons of Superstore. I'm wondering how did Amy and Jonah arrive at the name Carter?
I could see Jonah being a Jimmy Carter fan, was that the big factor?
I feel like it was and/or should be. #fan theory
Pencil sketch to digital colour. My vision of Jonah and his son Carter.
It’s time for Carter to say goodbye.
Tickle monster!
CARTER: Push yourself! Feel the burn!
JIAN: Oh, it was me.
