Descartes ruined the modern perception of consciousness. To imply a Cartesian theater, a brain in a vat, a soul and a self, to imply we perceive existence as a hallucination in a world that we can only identify a self by encountering a not-self and therefore a not-human and therefore an animal and yadda yadda atoms imply existence, existence implies something, something implies nothing, and nothing implies everything. That itself is a hallucination.

This photomontage was assembled from found photography from the 1930′s and original ink drawings, then printed using gum bichromate and carbon.

Daniel Dennett’s “Cartesian theater” irony is bullshit because Decart never meant conscious subject is little human inside human. it is conscious spirit for whom sensory information is available. In fact Daniel Dennet ironizes his own wrong interpretation of Decart.

I am not quite sure how anything I have said might threaten someone’s self-image, though I do appreciate that if you have always thought in Cartesian terms, if you have always assumed you had a soul that would go to heaven after the body died, then you might feel disoriented for a while. Anything that shakes up your common ways of thinking can feel funny for a while — imagine those who read Harvey and realized that animals spirits for life are not concocted in the heart — that probably animals spirits do not exist at all. The heart is a meat pump. Oh no — my self-esteem is withering! Galileo seemed to have scared a few people merely by noticing that Jupiter had a moon.
