The flowers of Carum carvi (caraway) growing by the side of the road into Halls Harbour, Nova Scotia, Canada. This hardy biennial is a native of Europe introduced by settlers for an ingredient in ryebread, cakes, as well as in soups and stews. Leaves and roots have been used fresh as a vegetable and seeds when ripe and dried. This plant thrives in full sun and dryish soils. Be careful harvesting umbellifer plants as there are poisonous members of the group.
