Fireplace Draft Stop: Templating After a lot of measuring I used my Festool Carvex jigsaw and circle cutting jig to prepare a 3/16" hardboard template for the fireplace draft stop. This arch will define the outside edge of the draft stop. Fits like a glove.

Glen & the Carvex

As promised, Glen had the new Carvex from Festool on hand. I'm not sure if calling Festool the Leica of power tools is entirely appropriate, but Festool does have a rather rabid following. I suppose when you pay as much as you do for a Festool, there is also a level of personal commitment that you don't get buying a Black & Decker. Glen made clear that while he's not a Festool nut, he does admire the level of innovation they bring to their power tools.

The biggest thing on the Carvex to me is the modular baseplate. A victim of "continuous improvement" on any jigsaw on the market is the slop in the base angle adjustment. Considering 95% of your cuts with the jigsaw will be at 90°, it makes a lot of sense to have a fixed base at 90°. Meanwhile, the adjustable base has a very positive adjustment mechanism so there is very little slop. The adjustment knob is connected to a geartrain which is connected to the baseplate with a wormgear. Solid design. At the end of the day though, for the $400 the Carvex will probably cost, I can live with my Bosch and put that money towards a bandsaw. Doesn't make it any less impressive.
