Woodstock '69 Artist Payouts

Festival season is approaching. Coachella, Skate and Surf, Bonnaroo, and Governors Ball have all been announced and details for Riot Fest are coming soon. With all that in mind, Ultimate Guitar scored payouts for Woodstock ’69, headlined by Jimi Hendrix who made $18,000 for his performance. Casey Liss, one of my favorte podcasters, went through the hassle of adjusting the 29 artist payouts in 1969 to 2015 dollars. The Origin Story of Casey Liss

What name do you use on the Internet? With the exception of my AOL Instant Messenger account, I use either “liss” if it’s available (it usually isn’t), or “caseyliss”.

Do you keep the same name everywhere? Generally speaking it’s one of those two variants.

Where did it come from? It’s, naturally, my given name. My AIM account I created in 1996, as a pimply high schooler. I was on the bus on my way home from school and was trying to come up with a screen name to use. My friend Ben was commenting on how he was learning bass, and had blisters on his hand. I used a semi-1337sp34k version of “Blister” for my screen name.

What does it mean to you? Well, it’s my given name, so it means quite a lot. I actually quite like having a relatively obscure name; you don’t see many Casey’s, and at least half the time they’re not men.

My AIM screen name I wish I could easily change. Maybe I can and don’t realize it.

Why did you choose it? When I was younger and the internet was more dangerous, I feared sharing both my given name and my surname. Now, I take pride in what I put into the ether and want to take ownership of it.

Do you ever think of changing it? My name? No. The only thing I wish is that I had “liss” in more places rather than “caseyliss”. As stated above, I really wish I could easily change my screen name.

Why do you / don’t you use your real name? As stated above, because I want to take ownership of my online persona and identity.

What was your first internet screen name? My ICQ number was (is?) 1202572.

What is your favorite name you’ve seen in your travels across the net? While they're not my favorite, I do chuckle when I tweet with friends who have not-obscure twitter handles. Great examples are @justin Williams (constantly confused with Bieber) and my friend Keith, who holds @thepriceisright.

The after dark session on GamerGate was full of great discussion on what happens when you give misogynistic twits anonymity and a platform. Couple that with a media that wants to fan the flames of any conflict just to sell ads and you get a giant cesspool of hatred that appears to be a perpetual motion machine. In reality it’s more of a petulant motion machine.
