Charlie scratched at his wrist; stupid thing was always itching, slowly ticking away the seconds until he met his soul mate. As a small child, he always asked his mom why they had those things there on their wrists. She would look at the small clock with all the numbers set to zero with a smile on her face, brush the soft light brown hair from her little sons face and say, “Because one day you will meet a very special someone, that someone will be with you for the rest of your life, making you very happy, and this little clock will help you meet that person.” With hazel eyes the size of saucers, little Charlie was awestruck but also a bit upset, “But momma,” he began, “why can’t I already have that person now? I would very much like to meet this person and soon,” His mother merely smiled and replied, “It will happen when it happens, the making of your soul mate takes time but when you do meet them it will be like everything falls into place.”
Charlie learned not to dwell on his clock but the amount of time until he met his soul mate grew upsetting by the age of 17, many people having already found their special someone and some only 2 or 3 years away, while his still had about 10 years. His mother was his consul, always assuring him that that was normal, when she was his age her clock still had about 15 years and that patience was needed for the making of a soul mate.
At 25, he finally left home, from the comfort of his mother’s warmth and father’s strength; he knew that if he were to meet his soul mate he would have to leave home and be independent. His mother cried but she knew that this was what he needed to grow and flourish and she knew he would fret less if he would meet his soul mate, his constant worry since he was small. He packed up and moved on his own to a growing city with green parks and huge libraries; he was not only a worrier over his clock but we was also a scholar, knowledge his passion and music his love. Viola was his instrument of choice, not many knew of the greatness that is a viola but Charlie was always one to find beauty in special places. Many say the mix of scholarly and appreciative nature led him to his soul mate.
Charlie awoke one morning 2 years after moving to the small town he now called home feeling different, in fact, he felt excited. He looked down to his wrist and nearly gasped aloud. It read only a couple of hours. He took a deep breath to steady himself, “Okay Charlie, you got this, you are just going to meet the person you are going to spend your life with, no big deal, no problem, it’s all good, “ he said to himself as his smoothed his hair down and looked in the mirror. “Alright you look like a stud, okay, you ready? Okay, well the library seems like a good place to pass the time. Let’s go there.” If someone had seen him there and then, they would have described him as completely off his rocker, talking to himself, eyes wide; a flaming lunatic.
He walked into the library and said hi to the librarians and aids as he usually did, but then pointed to his clock and gave thumbs up, followed by putting two fingers up to show it only needed two hours. The women and men returned the thumbs up, ecstatic for the boy with the hazel eyes. He grabbed a thick book from the shelf marked Self Help and began to read on patience and de-stressing, he knew that it was sort of foolish but he couldn't help it, knowing the theory helped him de-stress and before he knew it his clock only had 30 minutes. He heard the library door open and close, the staff giving a cheery “Welcome!”, and went back to reading, not realizing that the clock’s time had reduced to 15 minutes in a matter of seconds.
He closed the book and stretched his shoulders, “that was a good read” he thought to himself, “I am so relaxed, but I think I need to read up on dogs, I really need an animal or something.” He stood and walked the familiar route of the library to the animals section and began sifting through books on breeds, grooming health, and even on prenatal care for dogs. He slowly shifted right as he scanned the books and felt a warm body hit his arm, startled from his concentrated stupor, he looked down quickly. He saw at his shoulders a girl holding a book on bunnies and a hand on a thick volume about breeds of dogs trying to pry it from the case one handed. “I am so sorry for bumping into you, miss! Here let me help you!” he said to her and gently moved her from the shelf, “see the trick is to…” his voice trailed away as he spotted his wrist. Zeros… All he saw were zeros. He dropped the book and turned to look at the girl in the face. She was small and petite, very small compared to his tall, lanky frame. Her hair was the same shade as his and fell long and straight past her shoulders, glasses framed her brown eyes and he couldn't breathe for a second, he was awestruck, she was beautiful. He looked down at her as she looked to him and smiled, ‘thank you for getting the book for me,” she said in a giggle of a voice, he found his own voice and made straight for the point, “Excuse me, but may I see your clock” He pointed to his zeros and with surprised wide eyes she held out her wrist showing his zeros. “Oh! Those weren't there a minute ago!” She exclaimed. He smirked and said as smoothly as he could as he leaned against a shelf full of books about pregnant dogs, “So, want me to carry your books for you, soul mate?” She laughed, “Yes thank you very much; I'm Cynthia by the way… soul mate.” Charlie liked the way that sounded, “ I'm Charlie; it’s very very nice to meet you.” He took her hand and kissed it softly. She smiled wide and laced her fingers through his as he took her books in one arm. Charlie couldn't wait to hear what his mother had to say and for Cynthia to become the most important person in his life.
