[Even at the age of 8, Joel knew he wanted to spend the rest of his days with Etho. His best friend, his everything, and never in his entire life did he think he could be apart from that oh so beautiful boy.]
The end of summer was nearing and the sticky heat of July slowly shifted into the creeping cold of August and Joel was dreading it. Soon he would be shipped down back to Minnesota, away from his cousins and away from his best friend, Etho. In only 3 months, Joel and Etho had made an unbreakable friendship. At 8 years old all friendships were forever but their connection was different.
A loud bang on the guest room door rattled Joel from a quite peculiar dream. There was a ship, but it wasn't in the water it was on land and it was ablaze. Fire eating away at the masts, engulfing the whole ship in bright orange flames until there was nothing left.
"Joel! Cmon! Open uppp" Her little Canadian accent thick as she tired to wiggle the door open.
"Mhm not now Gem." The brown haired boy grumbled from under his covers now also agitated and it was far too early in the morning to deal with her antics.
"Ethos here" She said in that mischievous tone of hers, just the grey haired boy alone was enough to send Joel up and struggling to pull on a pair of brown shorts carelessly discarded on a chair by the window from the previous day's adventures, dirt and grime still caked on from yesterdays slip in the creek.
"Just a minute!" He called back from behind the wooden door of his temporary room, for mid august in Manitoba it was surprisingly hot with Joel having to adorn only a t shirt out of his trunk with a small print of a donkey across the chest. With only two days left of his tri-month long holiday at his uncles and almost all his things packed up, Joel was destined to get all he could with his best friend and his younger cousin. The rapid banging upon his door had stoped and Joel took this as a good time to leave and not be mauled by the much to energetic red headed girl he called his family. He made his way down the dim lighted hallway and with a swing on the post as he careened down the stairs.
"Hey Eefo" Joel greeted as he hopped off the last step. Missing a front tooth, he was unable to fully pronounce the older boys name correctly. Adorning him a sort of nickname.
Now looking up after being met with no response he realized that well, there was no Etho to be found. Just an empty well loved couch and a feeling that he had been bamboozled. Gem, being the evil smart whited girl she is had used Joel’s bestfriend against him.
