30, 31, and 45 for your ask game!
30. hardest part of writing
Getting started!!!!! and also separating your voice from authors you’ve read recently, or developing a voice at all. I’m very, very sorry to say that the only way to develop a voice is to write, write, write and keep banging up against things you like and don’t like, realize the line between consistency and baldfaced repetition, and just have patience. mega yuck
Also managing the line between fascination and fixation. When we get a new toy (a phrase, or a piece of punctuation or expression) we tend to put it EVERYWHERE JUST BECAUSE ITS NEW AND SHINY. Having a beta reader who knows your bullshit really helps with this because Rae can personally tell you about the time I weirdly hyperfixated on the phrase “his brainstem lit up like a christmas tree” and I managed to unknowingly, VERY CLEVERLY, center it in three different HiNaBN fics before she sat me down and patted my head and said “this is what ur doing” and I went oh :l
31. easiest part of writing
When you have characters who are so real to you, so fully fleshed, that you can just let them speak through you. It’s amazing. To me, thats the magic in writing. The different relationships you have with a given cast is so amazing.
For instance, when I write Erasermight, I am Aizawa, and I’m friends with Yagi. I feel very close to Yagi, I adore him, but I’m not writing from the inside like I am with Aizawa. Aizawa is a personal excavation; Yagi is appreciation and extrapolation.
With my own books, I am Eli, and I’m friends (or getting there) with Tyler. On most things, that is, but I can write Eli EFFORTLESSLY because he’s coming from the same place I am. Depression, mainly, haha. But with Tyler, I’m witnessing him, and I have to make a few passes to get him right. It’s fascinating and illuminating on a personal level and assists in healing.
45. share the synopsis of a story you work on that you haven’t published yet
UHHHHH oh man. I have a few secret things on the backburner hmm.
I think the one I’m most passionate about is a MightyShield or DaveMight fic that takes place during the little extra comic where All Might comes to see Dave to get his new suit. I imagine this is soon after the fight with All for One, and Toshinori, half-eviscerated, pretends everything is fine and normal until it comes to trying on the suit.
There’s history between them, of course. Dave’s wife has passed and the two heroes have never really lost their love for each other, so when Toshinori just kinda freezes and then asks for privacy to try on the suit (and take off his clothes and reveal his broken body) Dave is confused. It begins as “what aren’t you telling me, toshi, what’s wrong” and escalates to this tenuous line of complicitness and guilty ownership that Dave feels that he has in Toshi destroying himself for the world. He makes a stand and says “I make your suits, I have a right to know if what I’m giving you will just lead to you getting hurt. I have a right to know whats going on with you”
So then Toshi is forced to show him the enormous freshly bandaged chunk missing out of his side and breakdowns and very sad sex ensue :) I WANNA WRITE IT BUT WHAT IS TIME!!!!
