how can small cat put so much pressure on one leg

Cats can change their weight at will. One time I saw a lady put a harness on her cat and it somehow suddenly weighed so much neither of us could pick the thing up. We lifted that cat all the time but as soon as it didn't want to go, it was like Thor's hammer.
