“Farmers Market”, an original watercolour by the well listed illustrator, Clive Uptton (1911-2006), featured in Treasure magazine, 1963. Watercolour on board, 38 cm by 46.5 cm | Currently being offered at auction on Catawiki
Clive Uptton (12th March 1911 – 11th February 2006) was a widely regarded British illustrator and painter of landscapes and portraits. He was born in Highbury, north London, the son of Clive Upton, who worked for Swain's, the engravers, as a touch-up artist and later for the Daily Mail.
Clive Uptton was educated at Brentwood Grammar School and Southend Art School before moving to London to attend the Central Art School and, later, Heatherley's School of Art. He began contributing professionally at the age of 19 before graduating from the Central Art School. When he noticed another artist named Upton was working for the Evening Standard, he added a second "t" to his surname so that their work would not be confused.
From his studio in Cheapside, Uptton contributed illustrations to most of the major magazines of the day, including the Strand Magazine, Tit-Bits, Good Housekeeping, John Bull and The Sphere. Between 1940 and 1942 Uptton was the political cartoonist of the Daily Sketch and the Sunday Graphic. During World War Two, he also worked for the Ministry of Information, producing cartoons and posters. After the war, he had a varied career as an illustrator and painter.
He was a member of the Chelsea Arts Club, the Savage, and the London Sketch Club. Uptton lived in Holland Park, west London, where he died shortly before his 95th birthday.

Delle Navigationi et Viaggi Raccolte da M. Gio. Battista Ramusio, In Tre Volumi Divise VOLUME PRIMO EXTREMELY RARE BOOK ILLUSTRATED WITH WOODCUTS !NO MAPS! 6TH EDITION VOLUME ONE ONLY ITALIAN LANGUAGE TEXT Publisher: In Venetia, Appresso I Giunti Copyright: 1613 CONDITION: This book is in poor condition. Hardcover/Rebound. This book has been hastily rebound. The current binding belonged to another book. The boards were glued onto the spine merely to protect the book. This hard to find volume of Ramusio's famous work is beautifully typeset and contains many woodcuts as well as a printer's device on the title page. The maps have unfortunately been excised. The text block is in surprisingly good shape for its age. There is some toning/browning and occasional foxing throughout the text. There is evidence of moisture damage along the right-hand corner. There is an old ink signature on the title page which reads Bendinelli Sauli. This book was likely housed in the library of the Bendinelli Sauli palace in Genoa. The palace is located in Via San Lorenzo at number 12 in the historic center of Genoa and is currently included in the list of buildings registered with the Rolli of Genoa. There is another ink inscription on the rear endpaper written in Italian. This book is a prime candidate for rebinding. ~ Though he himself traveled little, Ramusio published Navigationi et Viaggi ("Navigations and Travels"); a collection of explorers' first-hand accounts of their travels. This was the first work of its kind. It included the accounts of Marco Polo, Niccolò Da Conti, Magellan, Alvar Nuñez Cabeza de Vaca, and Giosafat Barbaro, as well as the Descrittione dell’ Africa. The first volume was published in 1550. This is the 6th Edition of said volume published in 1613. This collection of voyages was compiled by Giovanni Battista Ramusio (Venice, 1485-1557). The three volumes he left form the most highly valued collection of voyages of the sixteenth century. It is composed of accounts of voyages that had already been published, translated from the French, Spanish and Latin, and also of manuscript accounts that appear here for the first time. All authors are unanimous in their praise of Ramusio's choice of published narratives. Locke, the English philosopher, states that it is "the most perfect work that nature in any language." Harisse writes, "The publication of Ramusio Raccolta may be said to open an era in the literary history of Voyage and Navigation. Instead of accounts carelessly copied and translated from previous collections, perpetuating errors and anachronisms, we find in this valuable work, original narratives that betray the hand of a scholar of great critical acumen. Ramusio's collection of voyages enjoyed great success, and each volume appeared in several editions, some containing more narratives than others, and with small differences in the maps. 9" x 13.5" 394 pages
