There is a neat little box on Cate's worktop. Crisply folded and set in its closed lip is a note: So sorry for not telling you I was alive. Forgive me? Signed, with a misshapen heart at its end, Your Devoted Friend & Mentor, Bruno
Did he think a bit of mint and dark chocolate coated in edible, silver dust could make up for what he had done?
Cate read the note and promptly slapped the box off of her desk. Did Bruno really think chocolates would make her any less angry with him? Really! The nerve of that man.
Fuming, she read the note over again in her hand. That stupid little mishapen heart irritated her, especially because it was so offputtingly endearing.
She picked up the box and flipped open its top, silently relieved when she saw none of the sweets had been harmed. She was still angry with him, but why should she deprive herself of a well-deserved treat just because he was terrible?
She was going to shoot him. Or think about it, at least.
