New Category: Short Fics (under 5000 words)
Hello, everyone, and welcome to August! One of the things that I'm excited for this month (other than salt air and the rust on your door) is the return of @wordplayfics, one of the most chaotic and frenzied events in this fandom (honorable mention to 1D Day) and possibly anywhere? For anyone uninitiated, each year has 5 weeks during which each Wednesday a prompting word is released, and fics inspired by that word post 7 days later on the next Wednesday. Then the next word is released, and we do it again. Communal panic is the most fun kind of panic?
Anyways.
The short timeframe of the Wordplay challenge often results in some shorter fics -- of the 712 fics that have been posted through 7 years of Wordplay, only 42 of them have been over 10,000 words. Less than a quarter of them have been over 5,000 words. Around 100 of them are less than 1,000 words. There are a few exceptions in the opposite direction -- last year someone managed to crank out THIRTY THOUSAND WORDS in a WEEK -- but I wanted to take this time to celebrate the form of the short story. As someone with a very poor attention span and limited free time, I love a quick read, so I can't wait to see what you all have to suggest!

Submissions are not restricted to Wordplay (though fics from that are of course welcome); any fic containing at least one member of One Direction is eligible.
