YUP! I noticed a pointed lack of gender specification when she said "soldier" and "musician" so >w>

I just noticed it after someone in the tags was bashing the show for making Tilly ‘obnoxiously hetero’ and while yeah the show is still falling under heteronormativity, they were only talking about past boyfriends because Ash is a guy. And since Stamets is dating/married (still unclear I think) to a guy, it’d make sense for him to say that there’s a guy in a band.

Though I feel like they tried to emphasize it as much as possible in this episode with their composition and cuts without making it obnoxiously obvious, so I’d be surprised if there aren’t other, more concise, comments about this out there. I feel like, before this ep, it was possible to dismiss the shift in Burnham’s hair styles -it’s Vulcan aesthetics; Sarek wore his hair that way, Spock did, so why wouldn’t Michael- but this episode so rigorously ties the hair thing directly to Vulcan racial attitudes and discrimination, and sets up so many chances(invitations maybe?) to contrast Burnham’s natural hair on the Shenzhou and Discovery with the straightened or shaved hair of herself on Vulcan and other Black Vulcans in the series, that I figured it just had to be trying to say something with it.

oh my god I didn't even think of it like that. that's so sad and unfortunately probably true. i'm so upset that they marketed this as something hopeful and diverse when in reality it's bleak and fairly racist.

@catnipsoup i was genuinely confused abt that anon cos like? it's possible to have multiple father figures it's okay to look up to more than one guy and consider him a dad whether thru blood or friendship! in fact it's very lucky seeing as how some people don't even have one (1) decent father figure.. and lmao at first i took it like they were trying to say it's disrespectful due to their different races which confused me even more lmfao and like i'd understand being uncomfy with gabe calling him son if he was the one to force genji to choose between death or becoming a living weapon but HE WASNT it was mercy and jack and the UN too probably. in my understanding, gabe had nothing to do with it and hell maybe he even disagreed with it! we don't know and anon making bad assumptions rubs me the wrong way your final point is perfect too.

Stamets being like "there's a cute guy over there!" definitely does make sense when the cast/crew have referred to him as gay. I think if we just evened things up with some solid w/w m/m kisses, things wouldn't feel so lopsided.

I'm cackling like they literally argued against your perfectly fine post to say there's no point because you can't "fix" fandoms, and then when you rightfully dragged their ass they called you unproductive and said that wouldn't fix any problems in fandom. So they're just. A disaster lmfao
