Nano diaries, day 14: 17409

I watched a movie yesterday called Their Finest and it moved me to tears. I replayed it in my head for most of the night. It was flawless, at first glance. It made me want to write stories like that.

I watched it again today. I was moved to tears again.

If you’ve never read anything by Helen Dunmore, you should. She passed away in June 2017. I read a story of hers called The Greatcoat in one sitting, during a headache. It was like someone had unrolled a perfect movie in my head. I could taste it.

Stories like that are what I live for. They’re what I strive for. And sometimes, in a first draft, you get a sliver of something like that. And you stroke it lovingly, happy just because it exists.

After that, who really cares about a word count?
