The problem with Big Brother (and reality shows in general)
Celebrity or otherwise, reality shows are pinned on the necessity to portray reality and it's a cold hard fact: the majority of the time, reality is boring.
It doesn't matter how famous or interesting the people involved are, reality is the same for everyone.
On the television they are shown to be exciting creatures that everybody knows of who can be fierce or loving or protective. They're fascinating and you can't wait to see them in captivity because oh golly won't that be exciting!
But when you get to the zoo all they do is sit there and wander around aimlessly. Nothing exciting ever really happens. You might be lucky enough to see them rip the Hell out of their latest meal but you have to be watching at just the right times.
The celebrity housemates are the same.
We love them on telly but stick them in an enclosure and eventually they're going to end up lounging around, sunning themselves, doing nothing of real interest.
So in the end 80% of the show is people just sitting around talking with the occasional drama to break up the monotony.
And yes there's drama but usually in shows like CBB and I'm a Celebrity, a catalyst has been provided, the lions have been poked with a stick.
But frankly when there isn't some crazy task going on or some twist having just been implemented all Big Brother is is boring and I find it so easy to fall out of shows when I'm wading through forty minutes of
Day 35 - the perkiest housemate is discussing something boring and dull that is genuinely of no interest to anyone beyond these four wals with their fellow perky housemate
(followed by ten minutes of their discussion about something horrendously useless) just so I can get to the juicy goodness of the drama which, let's face it, we're all there to see.
