北川健次展 in CCGA

亀井です。

少し前の話ですが、福島県須賀川市にあるCCGA現代グラフィックアートセンターでの「北川健次　黒の装置−記憶のディスタンス」のレセプションに行ってきました。宣伝物やカタログなどをデザインする中で作品と事前に接していたのですが、トークショーを通してその作品の奥行きを改めて感じ入ることが出来ました。いつもながら自分の感性の領域の狭さを感じるとともに、やはり言葉や人物が生み出す空気に触れることで広がる世界があることを痛感します。

半年ほど前に依頼をいただき、お名前を検索しながら人となりを自分なりに把握したいと考えていたところ、徒歩10分程の恵比寿のギャラリーで北川さんの作品が取り扱われていることを知り伺いました。ギャラリーの方から「どなたかの知り合いですか？」と話しかけられて、言わなくてもいいのに「ちょっと北川さんの...」とお会いしたこともない北川さんの名前を出してしまった５分後に「北川さんお見えになりましたよ」との衝撃的な言葉を聞き、動揺を隠すように先手を打って「あ、今度、CCGAでの展覧会のデザインを担当します亀井です」とご挨拶した何ともホロ苦い出会いから始まった仕事なのですが、ノスタルジックでスタイリッシュな作風とサブタイトル「黒の装置−記憶のディスタンス」という言葉をイメージしながらデザインを検討し、重層的な黒のベタ面を印刷技術的にもアドバイスをいただきながら探りながら出来上がったのが、このデザインです。

クローズアップすると黒に３階調があることが分かります。この３階調を出すために印刷的に適切な数値を見出すのが簡単なことではないのです。

トークショーでは、学生時代の駒井哲郎教授とのエピソードや、北川さんの対極に存在するような作風の棟方志功が絶賛した作品の裏話、池田満寿夫とのエピソード、銅版画への客観的な視点や刷り師の存在の重要性、立体コラージュ作品への思いなど、率直かつドラマチックな話の連続で本当にあっという間に時間が経ってしまいました。

後日、光栄なことに北川さんのブログに私たちが手がけたデザインに対する過大なお言葉を頂戴しました。本当に恐縮です。ありがとうございます。いただいた言葉を力に変えて、悩みながらも更にデザイン力を磨いていきたいと心に誓いました。

scad: larger school is a more busy city, my dream school, ridiculously expensive, an art school with strong art community, the school sets it up so that once you graduate you have tons of connection and job opportunities

flagler: small school and class sizes, smaller city but still has things going on, the flagler has a very college campus feeling, all of the students are incredibly nice, im already accepted, i got a good scholarship, has a good art program, pretty much everything is included in tuition like microwave, mini fridge, and laundry room, has a shuttle at night

ccga: i'm familiar with the town and area, close to family, only a two year art program so i'd have to transfur and make new friends halfway through, i know people who are going there
