Imagine your family being formed around Top Gun.
It had been thirty six years since you had met Tom Cruise on the set of Top Gun. You were young, just breaking into the business and this was your big shot. Tom had more experience, what with The Outsiders, Risky Business, and Legend. The casting director wasn’t quite sure of you until you met for a chemistry test and it all started from there.
Chemistry beyond chemistry.
Two years after the filming was completed, you two were married. A lot of the cast had come out for it - Val Kilmer, Clarence Gilward Jr, Tim Robbins, even your dear friend Tony Scott. You owed a lot of your life to that film, so whenever there was something Top Gun related, you were there. Meet and greets with real pilots, public tours of the planes, all of it.
Children were born. No, you didn’t name either of your boys Maverick as much as you thought about it. It seemed too self-centered. But they grew up watching that movie, loving that movie. At least twice a year, you’d all sit on the couch with big tubs of popcorn and watch it, you and Tom pretending to be bashful and embarrassed about it, especially when it became more and more apparent how much older you were than when you filmed it, but it was something that you were still proud of.
And then the inevitable happened. Sequels. Hollywood was all about the sequels. But they wanted you back, and they wanted Tom back. After talking with the director over a lunch that you prepared, they were even open to your kids getting involved. By this time, they were out of their teenagers years, trying to crack into the business as well. You taught them to be careful with what they did because you didn’t just want them to known as ‘Tom Cruise’s sons’, you wanted them to be recognized for their own talent. But they were ecstatic at this opportunity. Excited to be a part of something that, frankly, brought them into this world.
What a family you made on the red carpet that night. So many pictures were taken of the four of you together at the movie premiere. A lot of them were really good shots - you felt no sense of shame at buying some of the magazines that the pictures were posted in. Your family was your pride, and oddly enough, that was including a re-budding franchise.
