dsghkdskjhg i love thinkin about fakefic so i should have more to say but idk what to say that i haven’t already posted

i have a tag "doing fandom sideways" for things in this vein, which basically includes all thoughts about meta stories which imply other equally or especially  more valid versions of the story in question exist elsewhere even though they don’t, in fact, exist

and i kinda made my final paper for my fantasy literature class about that lmao because i will see any fun class and be like “time to make my personal hobbies into Academia”

i think about fakefic with ideas like wrapping the story around something that doesn’t exist, feeling the absence of the canon more than the presence of the fic, being forcibly alienated from context, reversing the usual creation order, making silences loud and meaningful, using fandom and fanfic tropes to cast meaning backwards.... i don’t know if those disjointed thoughts Make Sense to everyone else the way they make sense to me, but that’s what you’ll find in my “doing fandom sideways” tag

unfortunately i don’t have any fakefic to link you to, i’ve written some for a class project but it was a collaborative effort so i won’t be sharing it on tumblr. the book Carry On by Rainbow Rowell exists but you’ve already seen my thoughts on that not being the same as fakefic. i’m sure there are more books with that kind of concept out there now though, maybe people have recommendations? 

fakedom (fake fandom) is a related concept you can check out, there’s the original Empire’s Tribute fake fandom and Celestial Throne which I started-- here’s the tag on my blog and my sideblog. maybe Empire’s Tribute has produced some fanfic? generally i approach fakedoms more to use the concept of fandom discourse and drama to create the outline of a canon, whereas fakefic is about using fiction to define the outline of another fiction, but really it’s all related and you can do whatever you want with this sand! there’s a whole sandbox and so much sand!
