BIOGRAPHY

Born in Saint-Anne, Guadeloupe, Marius Trésor began playing football on the beach with his friends before joining the Juventus Saint-Anne where he played for eleven years. He won the Guadeloupe championship in 1969 and then joined the corsican club of AC Ajaccio in France. It wasn’t long before he was first called up in the French national team for whom he made his debut against Bulgaria on the 4th December 1971.

In 1972, he was awarded the Best French Player Award by France Football and later joined the Olympique de Marseille. There, he played as a right-back for a time as one of his teammate was the reference in Marseille and France NT at the time. But Trésor soon took over thanks to his skills and good performances. Although Marseille never won the championship while Trésor was there, he largely contributed to the good results of the club every seasons.

During his last season in Marseille, Bayern Munich wanted him to replace Franz Beckenbauer and everything seemed to be a done deal but Marseille’s board disagreed on some terms, asking for more money and thus, made the transfer fail. Furious with the club, Trésor left at the end of the season and joined the Girondins de Bordeaux in 1980 at the age of 30. There he found a second youth under the command of Aimé Jacquet and surrounded by teammates he knew well from the french national team such as Alain Giresse, Jean Tigana or Bernard Lacombe. During his four seasons in Bordeaux, the club never left the top 5 of the French First Division and even won the championship in 1983, the first for Trésor. After recurrent problems in his back, he retired in 1984, at the end of the 1983-1984 season.

Marius Trésor played for France from 1971 until 1983 and quickly became one of the leaders of the defense and the team, even getting promoted captain for some games for the 1978 World Cup Qualifying Campaign. He was part of the team in the 1982 World Cup in Spain and scored a goal (gif above) in what is surely one of the most (bitterly) remembered games of Les Bleus during the Semi-Final against West Germany who saw the French team losing a 3-0 advance to penalties after Harald Schumacher, West Germany’s keeper, severely injured and knocked out Patrick Battiston as he was about to score,  without getting even warned by the referee. In total, he played 65 games for France and had, for a time, the most appearances for France NT until Maxime Bossis and Manuel Amoros beat his record.
