DinApril Day 18: A dragon based on a dinosaur.
Welcome to DinApril 2024! Our eighteenth day features a dragon based on a dinosaur: Centrosaurus apertus! A mated pair are watching their son, who has an unusually draconian appearance and is currently setting the ground on fire. While his father is baffled by his appearance, his mother guiltily looks up at a passing Cryodrakon.
Centrosaurus is a delightfully Nadder-like dinosaur, so it was a shoe-in for this prompt. And it just so happened to live alongside a pterosaur whose name means "cold dragon".
Coloration inspired by the Beasts of the Mesozoic Juvenile Centrosaurus from 2020 and adult Centrosaurus from 2021.

Centrosaurus is the Ceratopsian that lent its name to one of the two major groups, and was probably the evolutionary precursor to Styracosaurus. It is known from many bonebeds, and thousands of fossils have been found, lending a deep understanding of this animal. It has been found in Dinosaur Provincial Park in Alberta, as well as Red Deer River, also in Alberta. In fact, it hasn’t been found outside of Alberta, Canada, and solely lived between 76.5 and 75.5 million years ago, in the Cenomanian age of the Late Cretaceous. Still, despite living in a limited region and time, it was an exceptionally common type of animal in these ecosystems.

It had stocky limbs, and was about 6 meters long, making it approximately the same size as its successor Styracosaurus. It had a single large horn on its nose that could curve in different directions as an example of variation within the species. It had large, hooked horns over the frill, as well as small horns on the eyes, remnants of the brow-horn supporting ancestors of Ceratopsians. It had long frills, with prominent fenestrae that could have supported display colors. Though known from extensive bone beds, this possibly was due to non herding animals gathering together during a drought, and are not definitive evidence for herding behavior. The frill was too thin to be used for protection, and probably was used entirely for display and recognition between members of the species. Its teeth were adapted to process large amounts of plant material.

In its small geographic range, Centrosaurus lived alongside other dinosaurs in very distinctive communities. It lived alongside dinosaurs such as Chasmosaurus, Corythosaurus, Daspletosaurus and Gorgosaurus, which may have preyed on the genus, as well as a variety of small theropods, including Avialans. Populations of it were eventually replaced by Styracosaurus, which may have evolved from it; indicating that it was a wildly successful genus, and an important part of Late Cretaceous North American communities in Canada.

Cynthia here!! I just saw this super sad book and it got me thinking... it is true!!
:( All of my friends are dead!! And so am I.
–How am I writing this if I’m dead? ….It’s complicated okay?–
But yes, my friends and I all died during the K-T mass extinction around 65 MILLION years ago! There are many different theories spread around about this extinction! The K-T extinction was a period of time where all of the dinosaurs died! :(
Besides this mass extinction, many of my herd died due to a changing environment that caused my habitat to get drier. This caused many of us to get dehydrated.
It’s all very sad, but it’s good to be able to tell you all my story with my blog!! It’s kind of like I’m back from the dead ; )
