fucking around with layers of underglaze and slip. if I carve shallowly, I get white, but if I carve deep, it’s black.

Hey, can you give me a little advice? I want to do underglaze painting/sgraffito, but I'm not sure how to do it.
I usually paint my pieces when they're dry before bisque firing, with slip I made from differently colored clay. I was wondering if I should do underglaze sgraffito in a similar manner?
(P.S. this blog introduced me to jackalopes for the first time and I love them)
hi!
you can absolutely paint with underglaze the same way, though you’ll need three coats for most underglazes.
your technique is very similar to sgraffito, but you’ll have better luck if you apply the slip/underglaze and carve when the clay is leather hard. if it’s dry, it’ll be crumblier and you’re less likely to get clean lines
