In typical Uruguayan fashion, Cerro Chato’s high school building is an example of meeting basic needs, but doing little to exceed them. It is not a third-world schoolhouse with dirt floors, no desks, crowded classrooms, and missing supplies, nor is it a state-of-the-art LEED platinum children’s palace. The average class size is around 20, and a cohort takes all their classes together through the course of the year. The 11th and 12th grade classes are divided based on whether kids intend to pursue humanities or sciences at university.
