I get it, what he did is not excusable.

But then why do we still have Columbus Day?

Documented Crimes and Atrocities:

Enslavement: Columbus and his crew enslaved many Indigenous Taino people of the Caribbean, forcing them to mine for gold and work on plantations. He sent thousands of Indigenous people to Spain to be sold as slaves, with many dying on the voyage.

Brutal Violence and Murder: Columbus instituted a brutal regime in the Dominican Republic. He permitted his men to commit violence against Indigenous inhabitants, and to suppress revolts, he ordered the killing of natives and had their bodies paraded through the streets.

Torture and Mutilation: Reports indicate that Columbus ordered the cutting off of hands for those who refused to surrender gold.

Sexual Slavery: Columbus is accused of engaging in sex trafficking, forcing young Indigenous girls into sexual slavery.

Tyrannical Governance: In 1500, a royal commissioner arrested Columbus and his brothers due to reports of extreme cruelty and mismanagement, which included treating Spanish colonists harshly, not just Indigenous people.
