The top part of this is still in reference to the meaning of the Tower card but we’ve covered that already so this is here purely for the ‘partner’ statement because back at the prison we had Kid calling Killer that so it’s nice to see that the feeling’s mutual between them.

Charter 1029 — The Tower

I had high hopes on this chapter due to earlier comments on here.

And girl, did this chapter deliver!

Firstly — hope to see a satisfying solution to the Sanji scramble.

Still think bionic upgrades are a cheap one-up which detracts from his growth (as would possible conqueror’s for Zoro) but it is amusing to watch Sanji leg it from Queen.

But then! The greatness, the magnificence, the utter adoration that is Law, Kid and Killer!

Oh, how I have yearned for thee!

AND IT IS SO GOOD.

Big Mom…

…is a pure…

…utterly terrifying and horrible force of nature. I will fight anyone who says she ‘isn’t that bad’.

And then! The finale!

Hawkins has to be the pettiest little twerp to ever have existed in the world of One Piece.

Anyone, can you think of someone pettier than the guy going ‘I’ll bash my head against a wall to give someone else a headache’?

Killer is such a loyal little adorable murder machine! There you go, believing in Kid like that!

I do wonder about the phrasing ‘partner’ he uses at the end of the chapter, as well as his role so far. We’ve seen him negotiate the alliance with two other crews and now the crew obeys him, no questions asked, although they don’t understand the reason for his command not to attack Hawkins. Are he and Kid more co-captains than captain-first mate?*

*(In addition to being madly in love, of course)

There you go, laying the truths on Hawkins!

Since so much of One Piece is focused on achieving your dreams, no matter the cost, this is a nice little window into the soul of the people who gave up. We’ve seen it from time to time, but not anyone who really gave up on their dream to the same extent as Hawkins. Apoo was already a traitor at the negotiations, while there never was a snowball’s chance in hell that Kid would give in to Kaido — here he is fighting Big Mom with a Hawkins-induced headache. No chance that he’d give up just because Kaido says so. Kid’s made his choice and lives with the consequences! He doesn’t seem to mourn the loss of his arm either when discussing it with Luffy at Udon, merely stating that he lost it against Shanks (the mention of whom must have made Luffy very happy indeed).

And speaking of arms..

OH YES, YOU BEAUTIFUL BASTARD.

Here we see why you and Nami and Sanji really need to go out for drinks when all this is over and done with, seeing tactical advantages like that.

I really like the panelling here; the stunned silence and raucous rejoicing framing Hawkin’s falling form.

Great chapter, I give it three thumbs up.

anyways!

so many things happened to let's just jump right into it

This was mostly a Killer-Hawkins centric chapter showing us the conclusion of their fight (finally!) but it starts off right after the end to last chapter, with Sanji breaking Queen's sword!! First of all, can we talk about Chopper calling Sanji 'my boy'??? why is he so cute ;;

Second of all...

look at his face. he looks so scared, and worried because he doesn't want to become like the rest of his 'brothers' - "if this keeps up, am i going to lose my emotions?' is the first thing he worries about. aside from my heart breaking for him, it just shows a lot that sanji's first reaction is to worry about his emotions, without caring at all about gaining 'new, amazing powers'. i have faith in oda not to make us hate him by doing anything to sanji who's the kindest soul ever, we have hopes :)

AND THEN! we move on to kidd, law and big mom's fight - or more like big mom just landing attack after attack, not really a fight.

kidd's head start hurting with a "headache" but we see hawkins banging his head against the wall because he's a coward who can't fight fairly against killer because he knows he'll get one-shotted :)

killer is trying to bargain with hawkins, and cue me loving killer even more. loyalty and devotion to your captain has always been my favorite trait (fave character is zoro you guys see the patterns) and killer being willing to sacrifice his life for kidd is just-

killer proceeds to insinuate that hawkins is just being petty because he gave up easily and submitted to kaido, and now he's regretting it (which is true hawkins stop being a jealous baby)

and then one of the best scenes in this chapter, and just a scene i can¨t wait for to get animated

Killer asks Hawkins: what happens if you get damage, that has nowhere else to go?

which is just??? what do you mean killer??? BUT THEN

HE CUTS HAWKINS ARM OFF (look at that art tho) BECAUSE, AND I QUOTE

THIS WAS JUST SO UNEXPECTED???? WHY DID I NOT THINK OF THIS???

and then killer proceeds to finish off hawkins (because like i said, hawkins used dirty moves because killer would just one-shot him)

with an amzing move, the sonic blade!!

WHICH LOOKS AMAZING?? such a cool shot, and an amazing chapter for killer and killer stans

also! during the fight Hawkins picks out a card - the tower, which is the title of this chapter. In tarot readings the tower represents "Sudden change, upheaval, chaos, revelation, awakening"

which oda explains is "an upheaval of the established order..., indicates the opening of a new path"

killer finally defeating hawkins makes it so that kidd can go all out in his battle with big mom, and potentially kidd and law would defeat her (i didn't think this before this chapter, but with this i really hope they do defeat her) and also

the established order might representant the two yonkos, big mom and kaido, and the upheaval is going to be the defeat of the two yonkos, which opens up a new path - the new era with the worst generation on the top!

I know Bonney’s hat is supposed to look like otter ears but you know...it could also kind of be the ears of a different animal that makes it a much more personal reference for her...this is not a coincidence...
