Chapter 250 - Ending

The transmigrated heroine of Mo Li, brings not only her previous life skills, experience and broad modern thinking like labour rights but subtle thought processes that wasn't quite apparent are modern- they're formed by wider view of the history and a specific kind but apathetic attitude that I feel is quite particular to today's world. And it does stand out from the other characters even though they are more intelligent or capable than her.

The example that prompted me to think was how Xu Qing Chen, Ye Li's extremely intelligent older brother, quoting her to other important people 'there are no eternal friends or eternal enemies, only eternal interests'. And that's quite true and probably seemingly obvious to majority of us. But would it be that easily obvious to the people from that era? People whose understanding of history is strongly attached to own family lineage first and later the wider world, ones who are more attached to principles of right and wrong as opposed to the capitalist view of profit and loss?

It's not that they don't understand profit and loss- capitalism is famously rooted in 'rational consumer' figure. But before, even the interests were couched in the language of morality- gaining power, money, assets for ephemeral prestige and honor. At least in China, going so far as to deem profit seeking merchants as the lowest class.

In such an environment, Ye Li's casual statement of 'no eternal friends or enemies, only eternal interests' is sort of breaking that veil of righteousness from the eyes of intelligent people. It WOULD seem profound and reorienting to them because, as people of great learning, they've learned to label personal interests in terms of collaborations and enmity- a wider goal that can be pursued. But the truth, as Ye Li mentions and if I may misquote the great J M Keynes, is that in the long run, we're all selfish.
