Whoa mama! Finished reading Reborn of The Rightful and I enjoyed it immensely! It tells a story of a merchants daughter Ren Yaoqi who falls to schemes of her family members and suffers immensely before getting married off dishonorably to a eunuch. She's rescued later by a gentleman scholar who teaches her many skills later and one day she wakes up back in her 10 year old body. Armed with better composure, intellect and knowledge of future events, she vows to protect those she loves and save herself from the miserable fate.

It's a pretty standard plotline. It's made interesting by the pretty period accurate focus on inter family marital relationships. Everyone is everyone's in law and the network of vested interests and power dynamics created feel incredibly real and make the world very lived in. The main Ren family, it's sub branches, the natal and in law families, other prominent families of the town and capital, even the servants and their intermarried connections, all serve a purpose in negotiating your goals. Although the plot later eventually takes on the larger political stakes, leaving the complexity behind somewhat.

The novel definitely has a pacing issue. While a lot of events happen in Ren Yaoqi's first 12 months back, the events later become broader and broader, more beyond her scope as she has already neutralised most of her immediate threats. This novel too suffers a little from the same issues I noticed in Mo Li/Blossoms of Power/A Ming Dynasty Adventure/Liang Chen Mei Jin where the heroine gets somewhat sidelined as the plot broadens and more things are taken care of offscreen by the hero or others than the heroine.

The romance of the novel is cute, unproblematic, not too boring not too interesting. It's a slow burn and Xiao Jingxi is very reminiscent of the sick crown prince from Blossoms of Power although a little less unhinged. The only conflict one might feel is that Ren Yaoqi is a merchant family daughter and Xiao Jingxi is a son of feudal prince. But you never really feel that it's a problem, knowing that he'll definitely take care of it (and he does).

The side characters and side pairings thus get more intriguing and conflict driven than the main pairing. They're definitely more fun to read. However it does become a case of too many characters and storylines at one point, leading to some characters being interesting yet not having enough page time (eg that Min general or Lei Ting)

The novel is a said to be adapted and I'm curious how they would do it given the main imperial seat is definitely a villain like Mo Li. And the novel does get explicitly violent in some places. But other than that they shouldn't have too much problem to adapting the broad strokes.

The strength of the novel lies in the tapestry of the characters it has created, the overall plot being decent but not the main strength. I won't mind skimming through the novel again.

There are many people who don’t share this sentiment, but I have an appreciation for when a fanfic is so separated from canon that it could’ve easily been its own original novel, and yet the author was only ever going to put that much energy into it if their favourite characters got to be there

I think there’s a difference between “the author stripped the media of everything it had to replace it with something easy” and “the author thought up a concept they really really like and are bestowing it upon the character like a medal”

I kinda want to do more paintings with the transparent/invisible subject thing, but I'm kind of dry on ideas that would be fun to work with. I had this thought of maybe painting like a brick/stone wall or some sort of a stone pile with a creepy ghost hand reaching out and clawing at the rocks, but that didn't really grab my brain from any direction.

I need to think up more scenes and subjects where the whole idea is that the thing being depicted is intangible, unseen, or so loudly absent that it's visible in outline.

Anyway to summarise, my enjoyment of the show went -_- like I enjoyed the early parts where it was still kinda following the novel and I was excited to see where it goes and then it went down in the middle as I started to see all the way they were faffing about without going in depth with anything and changing stuff and then it picked up again in the end where I just started getting sold on the changes and it became a little coherent again.

Finished the show last night and scrolled through the tag this morning and I never thought I'd say this but I think I would've enjoyed the show more if I remembered the novel less and the show was actually*gasp* shorter.

I did like most of the adaptation, i think they did a decent job adapting the big ass novel. Towards the end I even liked how they used the fifth prince to tie off the remaining ends. I like it much better than the soul swapping plot of the novel. Although I enjoyed reading about fifth prince in the novel, i also think the show adaptation of the character also makes sense and makes him quite more compelling. The actor was also so good.

I was also introduced to He Yu as the crown prince and I have fallen in love! He's just perfect as per my imagination and he made me interested in his upcoming show Reborn of the Rightful where he plays a similar character (I'm already 80% into the novel lol). I would imagine it's hard work pulling off someone cunning, underhanded yet so so utterly sincere, charming and Loverboy pathetic but he manages it quite well. Bu Shulin was beyond expectations fantastic and I actually didn't expect to come to like the Gu Qingshu- second prince storyline.

The show also had nice OSTs and I noticed it's staging and framing far more than I do in other shows.

I think however the show could've been excellent if they had trimmed the storylines. A lot of things they just touched upon with no proper resolution just because they were part of the novel like the sixth prince, the dancer, the half sister, the battle at North west etc.

i also think they fumbled Shen Xihe's character big time. It felt like they agreed on the fifth prince storyline but couldn't commit to making her fully Gu Qingzi or Xihe. They kind of muddled through her experiences, memories, internality, motivations. She didn't get any good chance at pondering about what she's doing or why she's doing the way crown prince or even the fifth prince got multiple times. It ended up in making her stiff and inscrutable in a show where she really didn't need to be. For a show where literally everything is driven because of her, they failed to make her compelling enough.
