And this is one of those moments where I can understand the...criticisms I’ve seen and that I alluded to back with Pedro in that it’s very hard to know whether or not to become emotionally invested in a ‘death’ scene when there’s still a very, very good chance Oda will turn around and go ‘just kidding!’ a few chapters later.
Obviously this goes back to pre-timeskip as well with characters like Pell and Bon-chan but I think it didn’t bother me as much then because we pretty much knew with certainty that nobody was dying outside of flashbacks until Marineford which is why that arc hit so hard at the time, but now it’s kind of like...am I supposed to feel sad? Is it okay to feel sad? Is it fine to see this as a character arc only for the emotional weight to be negated in the future?
So it’s hard because the scene itself is great but knowing the outcome kind of lessens the impact when you never know what to expect.
