⟢ Chapter 1
Tristan barely remembers his life before he went to prison wrongfully for his brother’s murder. It wasn’t that it was so long ago, but because he spent most of his time continually drunk, navigating life in an intoxicated haze and stupor, hardly aware of what was happening most days, as he served alcohol to others at one of the many bars in Obsidian City. He often snuck in drinks for himself in between helping customers, to no one’s knowledge. The one thing he does remember with startling clarity is traveling in from far away on a boat with pirates, his mother falling victim to them before he, his father and brother were dumped on the shores, before settling in the city, no money, no possessions, simply the clothes on their backs.
⟢ Chapter 2
Tristan still doesn’t know exactly what happened with his brother. What he does remember is drunkenly stumbling to a dark, deserted area of the city and blacking out only coming to covered in his blood and laying over his lifeless body. It was not a good image as the authorities found the scene, drawing the obvious conclusions. In truth, Tristan has no memory and many days he fears he may be directly responsible for his death, committing the unspeakable act while blackout drunk. What he does remember is feeling invincible, powerful. Tristan is almost certain what he drank that night was tainted with ethereum, the combination of the alcohol with the substance causing him to go into a frenzy.
⟢ Chapter 3
Four years later, sober thanks to the lack of alcohol in prison, he was released on a rainy November afternoon. A convict, he had a hard time finding a job until he was approached by a shady group, offering him money for doing a simple job: mining ethereum for them. Tristan knew immediately that it wasn’t legal mining. No, he was going off in the middle of the night, often with one or two others, to mine illegally. Desperate, though, he took on the job, making it clear that would be as involved as he’d get. He has gleamed enough to know they are likely using the mined ethereum it to dilute and sell to others for consumption, but willing to turn the other cheek, Tristan hasn’t bothered to ask questions. When he can manage it, he’ll sneak some for himself, using it as payment to others who want it or need it, often selling it to other species in return for their own goods or services, despite believing that ethereum has brought out the worst in everyone and being involved with such a coveted substance will bring about trouble. But Tristan has been in trouble his entire life and doesn’t feel like he’s getting in over his head. No, this feels like where he was always destined to end up, and whether he can change what he feels he’s been fated to remains to be seen.
