i've always had the feeling that tim... Blames steph for 'dying' . he blames kon too. not bart bc bart was straight up murdered lol, and not his dad, either, obvs, but like.
he feels like steph's death started the hell and then kon's death felt so unnecessary to him and after steph kon AND bart he was just like 'maybe NONE of my friends should be actual heroes actually and if they keep sacrificing themselves for the greater good i'm gonna lose my mind'.
but its all... really misplaced... bc he really thinks, underneath the gut punches of 'why would you leave me why would you do this to me' it's all very logically bruce's fault and that's why bruce Can't Be Dead.
bruce HAS to be alive. batman--the REAL batman, the one who chose him, the one who enabled him, the one who loved him in his own fucked up way, the only way that makes sense to tim now bc now he’s fucked up in just the same way---has to be alive.
batman ruined his life, robin ruined his life, these things took so much from him and they can't just... not exist anymore?
he has this sense of entitlement always that is really strange but also makes so much more sense when u realize he's a rich dude with mental illness and whose violence and obsessions were bought into and fed and REWARDED by his literal heroes.
i'm just always thinking about tim drake and the 80s/90s kind of nice guy (tm) that love comics and batman and robin who became the older millenial dudes who are kind of weird and cringey and creepy but think theyre so nice, think they're So Much better than the other guys and boomers. 'i can't be bad or toxic to you, i'm so nice, i'm so good, i'm trying so hard, don't you see how hard this is for me? how hard you're making it for me to be good and nice?'
do i think tim is a bad person? no. i think he’s a sweetheart, i think he’s thoughtful, i think, for the most part, he’s kind. but these traits can be weaponized by toxic people of all genders, and then held against u in a relationship court of law that extremely judgemental people like tim use. and he’s just also an asshole who can and should do a lot of work on himself. as it stands---he’s prone to moods and emotional deregulation where he can be withholding and treat people like shit like some kind of mini-bruce wayne but worse bc u still remember the nice kid he used to be who was also entitled in a fanboy stalker kind of way when he wasn’t being a bossy asshole to other teenagers just bc he was the one trained by batman---but at least he was more enthusiastic and smiley about it on occassion.

Something Bruce and tim have in common (besides being trans, rich, genius prodigies, obsessive, stalkers/"detectives") is that they are both superhero fan boys that are friends with superheroes so they feel like equals with them (and in many cases, that they are better and smarter than them and definitely always that they Know Better and hsould have control over them)---but who also feel well within their rights to update their wiki pages and form... action figure / doll type relationship patterns with them if that makes sense? Like NO u can't do that thats not what NIGHTWING would do etc....
Bruce's obsession with superheroes manifests most primary in his contingency plans which are practically love letters. Tim's manifests in his photography and his obsessive cataloging of events and abilities. Which is why in many ways its no wonder that he becomes so obsessed with kon. Kon disappears for long stretches at a time and also---his main ability for a long time is something tim can physically feel and touch and hold and that kon can use to help Robin fly as well? And then before kon dies they probably get even closer bc like. Honestly tbh they are testing all of his abilities together all the time for "training" but also just bc tim has the compulsion to know 3verything about his team and his friends and his idols and everything they are capable of. 🤔
-characterization mostly based on the red robin run, but even before Everybody Died, his vineer of normalcy hid an obsession with identities and perfection. nothing ever felt right. nothing ever felt Good Enough. people and things and fixations would make him feel whole and perfect for a while---but when he wasn’t actively performing relationships, roles, duties, or actively stalking / ‘doing detective work’ on someone, training in a specific skill---tim felt empty, and people and things had the tendency to disappoint him---leaving him feeling empty again
-normal wasn’t good enough, it never was. he always needed more, and he was just? never given the attention a mentally ill child needed. his parents weren’t neglectful, but they were busy. didn’t have the time to understand why their kid couldn’t stop crying at sleepaway camp. he just needed a hug. he just needed more time away.
-he was a child prodigy and good at anything he ever tried, and if he wasn’t---he obsessed over it until he was. he never felt like he related to other children despite brief infatuations or obsessions with trying to impress them---he always wanted to impress adults & people ‘robin’s age’ more.
-superheroism gives tim’s ego the boost it needs to feel ‘special’. in many ways the title of ‘robin’ is the gifted kid program bruce puts him in. ur sooo good at being a kid, u get to be robin so u get to be challenged now, u get extra special challenges and requirements to pass. red robin is the beginning of the phase in ur gifted kid life where u go to college and start putting in overtime and u decide ‘am i going to burn out if i keep doing this’ and tim goes ‘i most definitely am going to burn out but also i personally am going to keep going forever untl i die which i kind of hope is sooner rather than later sometimes.’
-he finds the rich social life he was born into boring & trite---but being middle class is even more boring & trite and then he doesn’t have the luxury of being able to do whatever he wants, which is important to him. tim craves discipline & teachers & mentorship and also a challenge, but he never wants his time to be wasted on menial ‘normal’ life tasks. he likes adventure, danger---THRIVES off of bruce’s “tests” which he loves more than anything.
-he won’t admit that, though. even tho he doesn’t WANT to be normal---the fact that he is normal feels like a stain on his record that seperates him from the rest of the family and he kinda is insecure that his parents arent’ dead canonically to the point he avoids cass at first? lol
-he and bruce have the biggest... mutual understanding of batman & batkid bc like. TIM forced his way into being robin, and while i maintain bruce could’ve said no---they have this mutual delusion that tim WANTS to be here and there’s NO WAY tim could ever leave bruce unless he’s willfully pushed from the nest. (which is of course, tested... but tim does of course always come back.)
-tim and bruce lie to each other, a lot, but more than that they lie to themselves in that bruce LETS tim have ‘something over him’ always. tim is ALLOWED to have secrets, to have friends, in a way, say, damian and jason and steph, (the bad robins) were not.
-tim is very spoiled in a lot of ways tbh, he’s very bossy and he naturally assumes he’s in charge of every situation bc he’s extremely competent. this is why he and conner don’t get along--superboy bucks back on that autority
