i really do think jason’s characterization in battle of the cowl makes sense and i’m probably the only person on earth who does, but people don’t always act in sensible ways or make good decisions. and jason todd is not psychologically stable.
do you know how many people he killed or SOLD DRUGS TO even tho he’s STAUNCHLY ANTI-DRUGS for one of the three FOLLOWING outcomes to be completed?
one: bruce kills the joker. (ideal outcome.)
two: jason kills the joker AND THEN kills bruce. (not ideal at all.)
three: bruce stops jason from killing the joker and all three of them die in an explosion set to go off just in case bruce takes too long either way. i hope you die. i hope we both die. etc.
this is not some grand chess plan. this is the maddening deliciously whimsical pointlessly convoluted instagram-worthy rube goldberg machine of death and making several stupid points that all technically go against what jason believes in but who cares as long as they get to the same stupid end.
bruce isn’t supposed to die on his own. bruce is supposed to die or live with jason, by jason’s hand, bc of jason, and in all three outcomes---the joker dies. there is no option where the joker lives and bruce dies.
but that’s what happens.
whatever u hc happened to jason in his childhood----and there are a lot of things u can extrapolate from it----i really do hc that bruce saved him from a terrible life. and that in exchange, jason was always supposed to save bruce from himself, as every robin before and after him was supposed to.
he loses his sense of control. he loses his protector, the one constant in his life beyond life even as he goes aainst him and his bizarre sense of justice. (bc bruce was, he knows, protecting jason from the red hood as much as he was protecting himself, and that’s its own kind of love, it’s own stupid, terrible kind of love.) robin loses batman. and he goes off the rails in a way he never has before bc he’s never had to. bc he needs batman, and he needs robin, regardless of what he has to say about the people to come after him (and who have died for him.)
the red hood seamlessly fits into the equation---between jokers and batmans and robins, there’s always the start of a new villain, there’s always one truly bad day, there’s always the hope batman and robin can save somebody and the risk they can ruin them, and that’s where jason has always existed, at the bottom of a toxic pit that he has always believed only batman can pull him out of, by making the effort.
so do i think jason went crazy? yeah. obviously. but also? jason todd can go crazy go stupid? there’s no such think as a methodical serial killer who are completely normal seeming and aesthete in every day life like dexters and hannibal lecter aint real or even realistic yall. sometimes the shit just breaks you.
final point: jason literally says he’s being the better batman in under the red hood. he’s doing what bruce can’t. totally natural to go from that (and his arc in nightwing, which i don’t... like... but still) to like. batman is gone now. i was robin. i was trained to be batman. i was trained to take over gotham when batman died. i was a better batman. i am batman now. dick was always the better robin. dick can be my robin.
it’s weird, but jason is weird, guys. you can pick and choose all you want from canon, god knows jason has more than enough canon to choose from at this point---but i personally really like battle of the cowl, i like when characters come undone. i think it makes sense the way jason becomes totally illogical bc have you never been totally illogical during an episode before? c’mon...
batman has contigency plans for most superheroes, but he has none for starfire, beast boy, vic, or raven. bc it would be crossing one of dick's lines in a way that he can't. for all his faults... bruce really believes in dick's ability to make and have true friends and he desperately does not want to take his 'people' skills away from him bc he thinks that's dick's best and most useful quality besides his genius intellect and fighting capabilities which he knows supersede his own but its easier for him to compartmentalize his children into singular/dual assets only they have.
tim's is 'hacking' & 'planning.'
dick (as nightwing)'s is 'teamwork' & 'people.'
cass's is 'fighting' & 'reacting.'
steph is 'enthusiasm' & 'growth.'
jason ironically is just the ability to kill people bc i think after the red hood comes into being and after bruce dies and after so many robins have died, dick especially, bruce just comes to terms with 'its never okay if people die but some people still maybe need to die for batman to work and gotham to be safe and maybe jason can be the proper fear and justice that gotham needs in a way that i can't anymore bc of the justice league and all these fucking children. AND if he kills i dont have to.'
like can you imagine how actually little crime there is in gotham after battle of the cowl? there were so many fucking batmans out there and one of them was literally torturing people before he killed them LOL. jason is effective as fuck at fear.
and then damian. tbh he hasn't figured damian out yet. he thinks damian's special power may actually be being able to be normal despite all that he's been thru. being kind but not to impress anybody or please anybody. just bc underneath all the shit he's been thru. he loves with his whole heart, and he's just. painfully genuine, the way only a child can be, the way bruce kind of techniclly is but in a way no one notices bc he's an adult man acting exactly like damian in so subtler ways lol.
but anyway back to the point about the titans, while batman does have jurisdiction over the jl---despite dick being a founding member same as him---the titans are SOLELY a dick thing and yj is solely a tim thing. no adult supervision for the titans at least. no spying. he funds them, he invents things for them, but he leaves them alone unless they ask for their help---and dick never asks for his help. dick really talked him thru teen titans to begin with, and dick, using his future oldest sibling powers for good and not evil---convinced bruce for better or worse that his children CAN do school, do justice league work, do teen titans, do their own work, work with him, and even havea job at the same time, to the point when dick stopped doing one of these things (school) bruce got really mad at him for it lol.
(everything bruce expects from his kids its because bruce did it, and then dick did it even better and he did more of it. bc dick grayson is way more competent than batman. probably bc he doesn’t have to devote so much of his brain to ocd and nearly as many cognitive blocks that come from untreated childhood depression without any coping mechanism (he was still depressed but at least he got like a fuckton of exercise. endorphins pumping lol), but still.)
however, if any of these people were to ‘go evil’ etc, bruce expects them to take care of it. he’s not going to do it. you take care of it. you left the dirty dishes in the sink and decided not to make a contigency plan. they’re your friends. i expect you to take care of your own business.
and when bruce says ‘take care of your business right fuckin now mister. stop ur friend or ELSE.’ well. they can go against bruce. but bruce has a way of making his opinion known until dick or tim prove themselves right. (and its comics. they are always right to trust their friends. their friends always pull through.)
in a way bruce’s apparent hatred of all of his kids friends---is because 1) any time with ur friends is time away from me. 2) all of them see how shitty bruce treats him and hate it even tho none of them do anything about it bc the kid wont let them 3, and most importantly) all of them respect dick/tim more than bruce, and bruce, in typical white guy old dad fashion---can’t stand percieved disrespect.
especially since a part of bruce’s heart will always belong to the titans? he considers them all basically in-laws. he cares for them. he cares about them. he doesn’t respect them as people, bc he doesn’t respect people as individuals. but he respects the hustle of superherodom. he more than anything is glad that dick / tim have them. he can’t imagine what would happen if they didn’t. bc he can’t imagine his life without his kids and the outsiders and (some) of the justice league at this point.
GOOD MORNING. i’m going thru some serious writers block rn tbh all i want to do is read new teen titans and talk about new teen titans and also batman. but i don’t want to make this whole blog liveblogging and hcs bc u??? followed for writing probably. i’m having a bit of guilt about not writing enough on my writing blog & anxiety about not performing well & not being able to plot or write very well bc my braiin is focused on just like? reading and commenting on ONE thing rn?

he can create a sonic boom HALFWAY ACROSS THE CITY that the titans can trace to his exact location? (he apparently worked on this with robin. dickwally rights!)
he can make the air around someone vibrate to the point he siphons the air around them and takes away someone’s oxygen but is so good at this he can do it so its only temporary and they simply pass out? fucking airbender antics?
