((The subject matter of this video talks about censoring a ‘sexualized’ animated woman and the guy who made it does make -responsible!- sexy cartoon art. It’s not bad but I’m recommending it specifically for us older PowerPuff fans.))
The long awaited analysis of 2016PowerPuff’s treatment of Ms Bellum by one of my favorite internet personalities+animation critics: @cr-familiar-faces Chad Rocco/CR.
He’d already done a fantastic redesign episode about the reboot. And CR has some great words of wisdom about the whole situation. I especially loved his picking-apart the og ep. “Equal Fights”; to me that episode WAS more about recognizing when someone is manipulating you than feminism directly. It could have been better, but Lauren tried her best!
And it really did strike a nerve with me what they did to Bellum!
Chad’s so right when it comes to her role in the show: The first episode of Powerpuff Girls I ever watched was “Something’s a Ms” and it solidified what an important character she was to the girls and to me. It made me wish I had a bad-ass friend who believed in me as much as Bellum does the girls. The joke about her being so important but never ONCE seeing her face was hilarious. In the scheme of childhood cartoon crushes or “waifus”, being an admirer of Bellum simply meant you had class - cause we all loved her!
Them axing her character was such a #heforshe move. It just screams “should-not-be-writing-new-powerpuff-girls” when you do a woman-character like this.
And - good GOD. I knew 2016 PPG was bad butWHOLEYMOLEYthatBikini Sisters episode! The body shaming! The fanservice (how ironic)! The implications about men being the only ones who can save the day! How DARE you Cartoon Network!!!
