⛰ Hello from Kansas’ unique Castle Rock, and Niobrara chalk formations! The Niobrara chalk dates from the Cretaceous Period—the remnants of a massive inland sea that stretched across west-central North America around 80,000,000 years ago. The chalk beds of western Kansas are famous for the amazing fossils found here in the 19th century, including flying and swimming reptiles, and birds with teeth. A mysterious and dreamlike landscape! (Not pictured: 50,000 mph winds that chilled us to the bone.)
