Challenge 138: Restaurant Battle: Critic Card and Two Ingredient Cards This was such a fun challenge, Sayada! Thanks for pushing us to think a little bit differently and giving us so many great options for this game. I knew I wanted to do a character, and thought it would be fun if my two ingredients went with her. Edna Jaspers prefers food with mythological or historical cultural symbolism, so I chose a pomegranate: the original forbidden fruit. It’s believed that Eve’s apple in the Bible was originally a pomegranate, linking back to the Greek tale of Hades and Persephone. Hades tricked Persephone into eating the seeds, which forever bound her to live in the underworld for a portion of the year. Her mother, Demeter goddess of harvest, was distraught and pledged to never allow crops to grow while her daughter was away, and thusly we have winter each year. The mushroom card was a bit simpler-- Edna Jaspers is allergic to mushrooms! Thanks again for the awesome concept, Sayada! This should totally be a real game. Caitlin

Challenge 138: Restaurant Battle: Rice and Fish Ingredients This was a really fun challenge to come up with, based on a game idea I had knocking around in my head for quite some time. Everyone did such a good job diving into the mock assignment and coming up with their concepts for Square Carousel Games, the fictional sister company to Square Carousel Publishing that Caitlin came up with for the book cover challenge! For mine, I knew I wanted to do some more food art in a style I’ve been developing, and I’m pretty pleased with the results. What do you think? -Sayada

Challenge 138: Restaurant Battle: Mandy & Lyn

First of all, mad props to Sayada! This was such a fun, well thought out game/concept that I truly enjoyed working on.

Being me, I jumped at the opportunity to create some character cards: the Critic (Mandy) and Chef (Lyn). In addition to creating these portraits I loved getting to come up with the little side stories and stats for each, it really nailed down the designs for me. P.S. Game devs, get at Sayada! We need to make this concept a reality! ;D

Challenge 138: Restaurant Battle: Chef Paws and His Favorite Ingredients

Chef Paws is an energetic two star meowelin chef from New York City. He specializes in Shrimp Quiche which includes the ingredients: egg, green onion, and shrimp. 

So I’ll admit when I started I wasn’t sure how this would turn out, I wasn’t immediately a fan of the challenge idea, BUT I love the final product! It’s not something I would typically challenge myself with but making this wooden playing cards was great for pushing my creativity out of it’s comfort zone. 

This was my first time tackling text on a laser cut product and I’ve learned a lot. The smaller text definitely needs a second pass in the future.

Challenge 138: Restaurant Battle: Chef Card and Two Special Ingredient Cards

Being a foodie and an experimental home chef myself I had so much fun creating these cards! I’ve been waiting forever for an excuse to draw food. Thank you Sayada for such a fun challenge!

Chef: 

Sayuri Saki from Nikko, Japan is a self-taught candy chef, has a Masters degree in chemistry, is sweet, quirky, and edgy chef as she takes interesting foods created by using her cooking, gardening, and sciences skills and brings them to the table with fun presentations and unique flavors to your palette! Her specialties are vegan marshmallows and flower champagne lollypops...bringing us to our two ingredient cards!

Dandelion: 

A normally unfavored yard weed, this versatile flower and greens are not only great in tea, but serve as a floral nutty peanut-flavor in anything you put them in. They’re also wonderful for your digestive system! 

Sea Moss: 

Sea Moss is a type of seaweed used a lot in vegan cooking to replace traditional gelatin (made from animal bone marrow). When heated up and cooled it acts just like JELLO! Making it perfect to recreate that fluffiness of yummy marshmallows.

Challenge 138: Restaurant Battle: Kitchen Catastrophe! Cards

In the kitchen, a lot can go wrong, but don’t let that lead to your own catastrophe with this cleverly brilliant of a game idea. With all games, there always need to be a few hiccups as challenges for the players to work through. In this case, in the restaurant, one must alway think about the safety of the kitchen setting or in many cases a health inspector will be the next to follow. With that, I thought about some major catastrophe in safety that could happen; rats, undercooked food, and unwashed hands. So the question is; how will you play, when one of these are in play?

Challenge 138: Restaurant Battle: Ingredient and Kitchen Catastrophe! Cards

I think this was a super clever prompt. I love participating in this collective to push my boundaries in ways I simply wouldn’t have considered on my own. This fit that beautifully.

I consider these similar to spot illustrations which I don’t have a tremendous amount of experience in and it was a challenge in that sense.

Thankfully Sayada made the templates to make the cards properly formatted and looking as they should.

Challenge 138: Restaurant Battle: Ingredient and Token Cards

I had so much fun with this prompt! I think it was a really creative idea that allowed for so much freedom in coming up with game cards.

I wanted to represent ingredients that I use regularly in my cooking, so lemon and garlic were my first choices. I’ve been using both in many of my quarantine pasta recipes, hah!

I also thought it would be fun to illustrate the token cards, as there seemed to be a lot of ingredient, critic cards, and chef cards in the mix.
