Ladakh - The Land of high passes
Ladakh is one of the few remaining areas of Himalaya where Tibetan Buddhism has thrived unhindered since early times. In the gompas, the buddhist monasteries, adult monks concentrate on meditation and religion while children living there attend school. The buddhist popular festivals are the best chance to live the traditions and the costums of the region.Ladakhis join the gompa with their typical dresses and jewels, meet up with friends, chat and watch the cham dance. Chang-pa and Drokpa tribes complete the Ladakh picture. Drokpa women wear fur costumes and headdress made with beads and flowers.

********** The Cham dance is a dance performed by Buddhist monks wearing masks and costumes depicting different characters of folklore and religion. These dances often include moral instructions. Here, the "skeleton dancers" symbolize the evolution of the mind towards enlightenment. The skeleton is a reminder of the impermanence of all things.
