About SCI/Spinal Cord Injury
In classifying patients’ level of SCI, there is the injury and then there is the neurological level of injury (NLI), which are two different things.
If you hear that someone has (”has” and not “is”) a T10 complete NLI, this means that at the T10 level they have in tact sensation (light touch and pinprick) as well as muscle function that can move against gravity. This does not mean they have no muscle function below the T10 level. Even with a “complete” injury. It just means that sensation and motor function are preserved at that level.
Complete/incomplete refers primarily to bowel function rather than the physical location of the injury within the person’s spinal cord. If they have the ability to contract bowel movement musculature or if they have sensation at the S4-S5 area or if they have deep pressure in that area in tact- if any one of those three requirements is met, the NLI is incomplete. If all three are met, then the NLI is complete.
