Sabbe saṅkhārā aniccā’ti yadā paññāya passati, atha nibbindati dukkhe; esa maggo visuddhiyā. All created things are transitory; those who realize this are freed from suffering. This is the path that leads to pure wisdom. - Dhammapada 277 Anicca (Pāli) | Anitya (Sanskrit) means the continuous process of transformation that marks existence. It is the belief that all things, including the self, are impermanent and constantly changing. That everything is ephemeral, arising, changing and passing every moment. I chose to represent the idea of anicca as an open infinity symbol. To me, it depicts impermanence, and that nothing lasts forever. It represents the fluidity of life and self as constantly changing. The open infinity allows for freedom of movement…an opening out into infinity and yet complete within, where the self flows in and out while remaining centered. It lacks nothing and holds nothing in excess. It accepts duality and imperfection as an inherent aspect of our existence. The uninhibited brushstrokes embody the void and wholeness of this transient life. The irony of getting 'anicca' as a permanent tattoo is not lost on me! It still seemed appropriate though, since even this 'permanence' will return to the earth one day. Only impermanence is permanent. May you embrace the ever changing, constantly in motion, fluid self.
