The Change of Guard Ceremony is a military tradition where guards and sentries at palaces and forts change periodically to enable a fresh body of troops to take charge. At Rashtrapathi Bhavan, The President's Bodyguard (PBG), the senior most Regiment of the Indian Army, performs this ceremony. The PBG personnel are excellent horsemen, capable tank men and paratroopers. During the ceremony the old and new guards march into the forecourt and the Commander inspects the new guards. After inspection, both the old and new guards exchange the national salute. Thereafter the new guard takes over the duties.
