Changing Course

After doing some research  a good deal of thinking I’m leaving my kwoon. This isn’t about style, it is about the way my Sifu teaches and what I want from my training. 

The deal breakers for me are:

-Atmosphere is too relaxed

-Sparring is a rarity

-Poor fitness standard, barely any conditioning(I’ve been working out outside of class to supplement)

It was fine in the beginning, I didn’t know better and if I were a casual learner I’m sure it would still be fine, but I’ve I’ve seen and read about the training of people effective in their arts. . . and what I do doesn’t measure up.

I want to push myself, really see what I can do. I also want some assurance that what I practice I can do under pressure, that I could defend myself.

For now I’m investigating a small Renbukai Shotokan dojo nearby. I did Goju-Ryu for a month when I was 18 and always kinda liked the idea of returning to Karate. I’m thinking if I can afford it, BJJ would be good to round out my training(a lot schools are out of my price range unfortunately). 

Deffinitely much to contemplate. . .  I’d certainly welcome input from those more experience. Any recommendations in the Portland, Oregon?
