Changquan aka Shaolin Long Fist applications.
While not directly associated with Bruce Lee’s Jeet Kune Do, Long Fist and JKD do share something in common: the belief that offense is the best form of defense. Long Fist was created to strike an opponent before they can even lift a fist to swing at you. Oftentimes, attacks combine punch and kick/knee attacks in order to strike multiple areas of the body at once. In fact, Long Fist is so aggressive that, in traditional versions of the style, there aren’t any blocks. Everything is based on offense. You can see that, in the second gif, a simple grab is broken with an extended strike to the groin. There’s no blocking or twisting out the grab. Just a straight up strike, pushing through the grab and hitting a vital area on the opponent. Traditional Long Fist forms are dying out somewhat as today’s demonstrations often employ the acrobatics of Wushu and are a lot less combat realistic.
Warm-up Sketches: Sequential Wolverine!
Laura is my favorite comic character, but I am always loathe to draw her since I never quite seem to get her correct. I finally sketched something I was happy with (the Monkey Flip on top; pen/ink over pencil), which spawned two more sketches (heavily influenced by the Changquan)! There is so much potential for great fight panels featuring Laura, with her off-the-charts skill and agility, that you are really only limited by your own imagination.
