Massive chanterelle haul from the Oregon coast today
As soon as I got home both the internet and the laptop became irrelevant to me; I put up all my halloween decor, unpacked, watered my plants, and then started working on my winter food stash.
I decided to visit the forest first rather than the garden, because I missed the forest so much, and before going I thought, well this is actually a bad time to go foraging. Because it's a Sunday afternoon. Surely lots of people are in the forest and they have already snatched all the mushrooms. I won't find anything at this time, I need to go in the early morning on a workday.
But then I thought to myself, you know what, it's presumptive to assume that other people can find the mushrooms or know if they're edible. People are not that smart nowdays. Even if it's 4pm, on a Sunday, I am still superior at foraging. I'm going to go.
And you know what happened next. I found this:
I screamed so loud in happiness and joy. This is the absolute biggest Chicken of the wood mushroom I have ever found, and this thing is intact. A slug didn't snack on it, a worm didn't crawl in, it is perfect. This felt like winning the jackpot. Not only this can feed me for a week, it dries so fast, I can preserve it and then have it all winter. Not only it's nutritious, it tastes like chicken! I can add it to soups and stews to make them chicken-flavoured, I can make sauces, I can fry it, this is now my source of protein.
I tore it all away from the tree and there's more than a kilo of mushroom! I kept foraging and found some chanterelles, and to my surprise, a few chestnuts as well! That's such a good find. I was so right to assume people don't know what is edible in the forest, and bless them for letting me have it all.
I got home to a new problem; I got rid of all of my drying stations when I moved, so now I had no place to dry my giant stash of mushroom. I had thought ahead enough to get my hands on some plastic nets; the lady whose house I stayed at had bought some potatoes in a plastic net, and wanted to throw the net away, and I asked her if I could have it instead. So drying nets were secured, but I still needed something to stretch them on. So, I grabbed my bike to look for some cardboard boxes.
And I found them! You can always count on people to leave cardboard boxes around the city. I clumsily got the boxes home on my bike, and then spent some time sewing the nets onto the boxes to create new drying stations. My chicken of the woods mushroom filled two nets completely, and I have enough leftover to make dinner and a lunch tomorrow. I had chanterelles and wood chicken for dinner!
The level of satisfaction is so high, I'm having the best day. Enough chicken mushroom for the whole year, food for the next few days, and some delicious chestnuts for dessert, from just one forest visit. Foraging in the fall is so rewarding.
forgot to post my insane mushroom haul
I found this massive ring of them that had a lot going off in all directions as well,, so now I might be under the ownership of some fairy but look at the mushrooms I found
