“  i  can’t  believe  everyone  thinks  i’m  the  softy. ”      not  that  it  matters.        fingers  still  thread  into  the  empty  spaces  of  hope’s  ;     appreciating  the  skin  to  skin  contact  as  they  enclose  to  grasp  her  hand.  it’s  corny  ,  maybe  even  a  little  romantic  ,  but  she’s  never  felt  more  at  home.      “  but  i  missed  you  too  ,  obviously.  ”      her  height  becomes  her  advantage.  uses  the  little  bit  of  her  upper  hand  to  pull  hope  into  a  hug.  holding  her  as  though  she’d  disappear.  again.

he  makes  her  soft.  tender  in  ways  she’d  never  known  before  auradon.  and  it  scares  her.  part  of  her  is  always  waiting  for  the  other  shoe  to  drop.  for  the  next  threat  to  come  crashing  down.  or  worse  ,  for  him  to  see  the  monster  beneath  her  skin.  the  sleeping  beast  that  lies  dormant.  but  that’s  not  the  way  he  looks  at  her.  instead  her  sees  all  parts.    dark  and  light.    bad  and  good.  the  mix  as  if  it’s  natural.  and  he  loves  her  all  the  same.  how  had  she  gotten  so  lucky ?      “  then  it’s  a  good  thing  i  said  yes.  ”

“  nobody’s  telling  you  you  have  to  do  anything.  ”      she’s  angry.     of  course  ,  she’s  angry.      this  is  happening  again.     and  she’s  mad  at  herself  for  making  the  same  mistake  a  second  time.    trusting  him.  letting  him  in.     giving  him  access  to  a  heart  that  hadn’t  even  begun  to  heal.     still  dripping  with  damage  done  by  his  hand.  maybe  by  her  own  too.  maybe  she  had  played  just  as  big  a  role.      “  if  you  do  this  ,  it’s  your  choice.  you  don’t  get  to  blame  this  one  on  someone  else.  ”

it’s  an  echo  of  her  past.  she’s  never  understood  a  single  person  as  much  as  she  does  him  in  this  moment.  the  same  words  have  fallen  from  her  lips.     whispered  into  an  empty  room  ,  tears  streaming  down  her  face.            she  won’t  let  him  tumble  down  the  same  dark  whole.      “  you  do !  you  belong  here.  ”      the  adjustment  is  huge.  those  raised  here  can’t  begin  to  comprehend  the  world  they’ve  left  behind.     what  the  isle  really  was  compared  to  this.   but  she’ll  be  damned  if  she  lets  him  go  back.  fingers  close  around  his  ,  holding  them  as  tightly  as  he’ll  allow.      “  you  belong  with  me.  ”
